VW - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - This is a 300-hp Volkswagen Golf Touring Car Concept - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Volkswagen's just-unveiled Golf-based race car concept looks like a GTI that's gone on an intake bender, pumped up its guns at the gym, and popped some roll-cage Viagra. Yet, the Golf's most notable feature is that it's just a Golf, sort of. There is no "R" badging anywhere, and Volkswagen stresses that the race car is simply a heavily modified, good ol' Golf, and its front-wheel drive!

Volkswagen

Created to evaluate Volkswagen's possible participation in the new Touring Car Racer International Series (TCR), the Golf TCR concept is less "concept car" than full-blown, ready-to-race race car. It routes 330 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four (okay, the engine was borrowed from the Golf R) to the front wheels via a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. The chassis is 40 cm wider—that's a mind-blowing 15.75 inches!—a move we assume was made for greater stability and to make room for those ultra-wide 18-inch wheels.

The front and rear bumpers feature gaping vents and intakes seemingly inspired by the wild-looking Volkswagen Design Vision GTI concept from 2013, augmented by a carbon-fiber splitter and a towering rear wing. Inside, there's a full safety cage, a racing seat with harnesses, and a minimum of carpet, interior plastics, or visual banality. If Volkswagen's evaluation of this concept car is successful, we could see customer cars just like it race in TCR in 2016.

BMW - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - 2016 BMW M2 Laps Nürburgring In 7:58?: Video - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

The 2016 BMW M2 may have only been unveiled earlier this week, but BMW is already talking about the latest M model's Nürburgring lap time.

In its "official launchfilm [sic]" for the M2, BMW claims the car can lap the 13-odd miles of the full Nordschliefe in 7:58. For comparison's sake, that's six seconds slower than the 7:52 time of the larger M4 coupe recorded by German car magazine Sport Auto last year. Still, a sub-8 minute lap of the 'Ring is still pretty impressive, and low lap times probably weren't BMW's only priority when developing the M2.
That's apparent from the launch video, which shows the M2 lapping a track that isn't the Nürburgring with a 1M and an E30 M3 hot on its tail. Given its compact size and classic three-box proportions, the M2 was always going to be compared to these legends, and it seems BMW isn't discouraging that. With the M4 now bigger and more complicated than ever, BMW needs a model that can more directly channel the essence of its older performance cars.

At the heart of the M2 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that produces 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque (369 lb-ft with overboost). Transmission choices include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. With the dual-clutch transmission, BMW says the M2 will do 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds (the manual requires an extra 0.2 second), and top out at a governed 155 mph.
The M2 also gets upgraded suspension, in the form of a lightweight aluminum setup derived from the underpinnings of the M4 and M3. Engineers also dialed in M-specific settings for the electric power steering, which carries over from the base 2 Series models. To match the more muscular hardware, the exterior is more aggressively styled, while the interior features sport seats and M-specific trim.

Range Rover - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Spy Shots - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Sport facelift spy shots – Image via S. Baldauf/SB-Medien

It looks like Land Rover is working on an update for its Range Rover Sport, as evidenced by camouflaged prototypes spotted testing near the Nürburgring race track in Germany. As this is an update we’re talking about, likely the second-generation model’s mid-cycle update, the changes should be minimal.

The prototype shown here has a new bumper design, with a new shape for the air intakes and license plate support. There is also a revised grille surround as well as what appears to be a new hood, one likely designed to fit the revised grille.

The second-gen Range Rover Sport was all-new for the 2014 model year. The original model had a lifespan of about eight years, and assuming the same for the second-gen model it means we should see this updated version introduced for the 2018 model year.  A 2016 Range Rover Sport has just been announced. It’s received a new diesel-powered HSE Td6 variant as well as some new technologies for the cabin.

Its likely similar updates to those you see here eventually appear on the flagship Range Rover SUV, whose current generation was launched a year prior to the second-gen Range Rover Sport. Both updated SUVs should make their auto show debut late next year or in early 2017.
Stay tuned for further information as development continues.

Audi - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Audi Celebrates DTM Participation With Special A5 - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2015 Audi A5 DTM Selection

Audi competes in the German touring car series DTM with a race car based on its A5 coupe, and in recent years the automaker has celebrated this participation with special versions of the road car. The latest is the A5 DTM Selection, which will be built in a limited run of just 50 cars and sold exclusively in Germany.
The special coupe is the third DTM-inspired model from the brand with the four rings, with the first one based on the A4 sedan introduced in 2005 and the second, another A5 coupe-derived model, introduced in 2013.

2015 Audi A5 DTM Selection

You can easily identify the latest special edition by its DTM, quattro and Audi Sport logos. It also features a Misano red paint finish, black exterior accents and 20-inch aluminum wheels in a matte titanium finish. More special logos are featured in the cabin along with sporty bucket seats, leather and Alcantara trim, and pedals in stainless steel. Red accents are also featured throughout the cabin, including on the backrests of the seats.
All A5 DTM Selection coupes come with a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel engine developing a peak output of 245 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. Drive is to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive system. Audi quotes a 0-62 mph time of 5.9 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph.

Mercedes - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG 4Matic Joins Growing AMG Sport Arsenal - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG 4Matic

Mercedes-Benz has today unveiled the GLE450 AMG 4Matic. It joins the growing range of AMG sport models that already includes the GLE450 AMG 4Matic Coupe and C450 AMG 4Matic models. The AMG sport cars sit between the most potent of the standard Mercedes models and the dedicated Mercedes-AMG offerings. The cars are developed by the Mercedes-AMG skunkworks but are officially recognized as Mercedes-Benz products.

Common to the AMG sport models is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine that delivers 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. In the GLE450 AMG 4Matic, the engine is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and spins all four wheels via a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system. Mercedes quotes a 0-62 mph time of just 5.7 seconds and a top speed capped at 155 mph for the vehicle.

Along with the extra poke from the engine bay over the regular GLE fleet, the GLE450 AMG 4Matic also benefits from sport-tuning of the suspension, steering and electronic stability control. Also unique to this model is the shorter final drive ratio of 3.47:1. Other features include air suspension, 20-inch wheels (21-inch wheels are available), a body kit and a Dynamic Select system with Individual, Comfort, Slippery, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes.

_______________________________________

The interior of the GLE450 AMG 4Matic is enhanced by a Nappa leather-lined sports steering wheel and real aluminum dash accents. A mix of carbon fiber and piano black surfaces can also be found, and for the pedals the designers have gone with stainless steel.

Some of the available extras include two-tone Nappa leather trim, COMAND Online Internet connectivity, premium BeoSound audio from Bang & Olufsen, and numerous electronic driver aids.

Mini-Cooper - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Stunt Driver Sets New World Record For Tightest Parallel Park: Video - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Remember your driving test? Parallel parking probably seemed like the hardest part of getting a license, but there are some that have almost made it a competitive sport. Yes, the Guinness World Record for parallel parking has been hotly contested in recent years. Chinese stunt driver Han Yue recently regained the title of most-precise parker after losing it to a pair of British brothers last year.

Yue broke the record in a Mini Cooper S during the recent China Drift Championship event at Chongqing Olympic Park, sliding into a space just 8 centimeters (about 3.1 inches) longer than the car. That beats the 5.16 inches set by Alastair Moffatt in an original Mini. That happened on the same day his brother John beat Yue's original record, but now Yue is back on top and it looks like he might be there for some time.
The dramatic sliding seen in the video isn't just for showing off, either. With so little clearance, reversing a car into the space the conventional way simply won't work. With this latest record, it seems like there's as little room for advancement as there is between the parked Mini’s bumpers.

It's also somewhat ironic that, while professional drivers are competing to accomplish the tightest parking jobs, the number of regular drivers that can competently parallel park could very well decrease as electronic aids take over much of the work

BMW - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - 2016 BMW M4 GTS Comes With Water Injection System, 493 Horsepower: Video - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2016 BMW M4 GTS

For anyone thinking the BMW M division has become a little soft over the years, may we introduce the new 2016 BMW M4 GTS. The car is the production version of the M4 GTS concept car unveiled earlier this year and is the first of the M division’s special models to be confirmed for the United States. It arrives early next year, as a 2016 model.

In case you’ve forgotten, the M4 GTS is the successor to the M3 GTS launched in 2010 but never sold locally. It follows a successful formula utilized for previous BMW specials such as the M3 Evolution (1988), M3 Sport Evolution (1990), M3 GT (1995), M3 CSL (2003), and the aforementioned M3 GTS, and that’s an increase in power combined with a reduction in weight.

Power comes from the M4’s familiar turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six, however, the engine has been upgraded with a new water injection system that not only boosts power but also improves efficiency. Peak output registers at 493 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, which is up considerably on the stock model’s 425 hp and 406 lb-ft. Despite the performance increase, fuel economy is said to be largely unchanged. The standard transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch unit.

So what will the M4 GTS do? BMW quotes a blistering 0-60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds. Top speed is a tick under 190 mph and a lap of the Nürburgring takes just 7:28.

The water injection system sprays water in both the intake manifold and directly into the cylinders, where it helps cool the pressurized mix of air and fuel prior to combustion. This cooling effect makes for more efficient combustion, leading to increases in both power and efficiency. In addition, the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber—and therefore the engine’s tendency for detonation (knock)—is reduced, allowing for more boost and earlier injection timing.

The system relies on an arrangement of three water injectors in the intake plenum chamber, where each supplies water to two of the engine’s six cylinders. A 1.3-gallon tank is located below the trunk and is joined by the water pump, sensors and valves. BMW concedes that under track conditions, this tank might have to be topped up with water every time the vehicle is refueled. However, under normal everyday operating conditions, the intervals are said to be much longer. Even in highway driving, the water tank only needs topping up at every fifth refueling interval. Systems are in place to ensure the engine is protected should the tank run dry.

2016 BMW M4 GTS

Another advanced technology appearing on the M4 GTS are OLEDs (organic light-emitting diode), in this case used in the tail lights. The special LED's low installation height of just 1.4 millimeters, and the ability to actuate individual light modules that emit light to a single point, allow designers to be much more creative when designing light clusters. Multi-element lighting, layering, three-dimensional effects, and a wide variety of vivid colors—constrained by safety regulations, of course—are all possible.

Beyond these technologies, the M4 GTS also benefits from significant weight-saving measures. The end result is a 3,329-lb curb weight. This was achieved by replacing many of the standard M4’s steel components with lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic pieces, such as the hood, roof and trunk lid plus hidden components such as the instrument panel support and driveshaft. Additional weight was reduced through the use of lightweight forged wheels, carbon-ceramic rotors and a rear seat delete option.

2016 BMW M4 GTS

When it comes to handling, the M engineers have installed a fully functional aero kit, most of which is composed of carbon fiber. There is also a lightweight suspension setup composed of forged aluminum. It features a racing-derived rigid connection between the rear axle subframe and the body as well as three-way adjustable coilovers with mechanically adjustable compression and rebound settings. Moreover, the anti-roll bars and support mounts are closely matched to the significantly increased engine power of this model.
Other features helping to add an extra edge to the driving dynamics include the rear differential’s hollow lightweight output shafts and the Active M Differential. The latter uses an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential that reacts with split-second speed to vary the locking action, which can be anywhere between zero and 100 percent. The steering system has also been adapted to suit the car’s track-focused nature.

For the interior, the M4 GTS has been fitted with unique bucket-style M sports seats in Alcantara (including lightweight backrests with cut-outs). In between the seats, the BMW M4 GTS boasts a new, asymmetrically styled lightweight center console that shaves around 30 percent off the weight of the corresponding component in the regular M4. A roll cage and fire extinguisher have also been added to the car.
The world debut of the BMW M4 GTS will take place at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show later this month. BMW plans to build just 700 examples in total. Of these, 300 have been earmarked for the U.S. For more from the Tokyo Motor Show, head to our dedicated hub.

Jaguar - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Leno Gets Seat Time With The Jaguar F-Type Project 7 - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Jay Leno took his Garage on the road, so to speak, when he and his film crew arrived in Monterey for Car Week this year. While up North away from his actual garage, Leno met up with Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum. The two chatted about the F-Type Project 7 before hopping in and taking the limited-edition cat for a spin on local b-roads.

After spending time chatting about the Jaguar, Jay moves on to something a bit older. This episode serves up a two-fer on the automotive front. Leno focuses his attention on a 1916 Sturtevant Auburn. Never heard of it? That's probably because Sturtevant only produced cars for about two years. It came about after WWI, when surplus engines were left around that would've normally found their way into airplanes and industrial equipment. What do you do with an unused airplane engine? Stick it in a car and go racing!
We like Sturtevant's moxy and we wish they would've stuck around for a few more years.

Range Rover - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Kahn Design Rolls Out Six-Wheeled Flying Huntsman Defender Pickup - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Kahn Design Flying Huntsman 110 WB 6x6 Double Cab Pickup concept

Britain’s Kahn Design is back with a new six-wheeled monster; this time in the form of a pickup truck. The latest addition to the company’s growing family of Flying Huntsman coach built Land Rover Defenders made its debut at the recent Land Rover Owners Show in the United Kingdom, and though it’s labeled a concept the company has already confirmed it for production.

It’s called the Flying Huntsman 110 WB 6x6 Double Cab Pickup, and it’s essentially a version of the six-wheeled Flying Huntsman 110 WB 6x6 SUV that’s had its third-row seats replaced by a tray. Incredibly, the starting price is just £99,875 (approximately $152,100), before taxes, which is considerably less than what you have to pay for the SUV and less than a third of the price of Mercedes-AMG's G63 6x6.

Kahn says a six-speed manual will be fitted as standard but buyers will have the choice of four- and six-speed automatics. The vehicle will also be made available with left- and right-hand-drive configurations. The standard engine will be a 2.2-liter diesel but more powerful options, including a V-8, will be available. The previous SUV version was shown with a 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 sourced from General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] that had as much as 500 horsepower on tap.

As with all of Kahn’s coach built vehicles, each will come adorned with a plaque naming all the people involved in the build. Buyers will also be able to fully customize the interior with options such as quilted and perforated leather, Alcantara and Harris Tweed.

Kahn plans to limit production to just 20 examples per year, and given the attractive pricing we think build slots will sell out fast. Of course, Kahn’s Flying Huntsman family has other, more practical options. They include a smaller, single-cap pickup as well as a two-door SUV.

Mercedes - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class First Drive - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2016 Mercedes-Benz G Class

For almost every vehicle on the market, product cycles typically last six to eight years. At the end of that run, the vehicle gets a redesign with either a new or significantly improved structure. That’s not the case for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. First released in 1979, the G-Class has never been redesigned. Instead, Mercedes has opted to continually update the interior appointments, powertrains, and tech features of the “Geländewagen”—as it’s called in its home country—and that's precisely the case for the reworked 2016 model.

The changes for 2016 are mostly minimal. The front bumper and gauge cluster are revised, adjustable shocks with Sport and Comfort modes are newly available for the base G550, and a series of bold new colors is offered.

However, there’s some pretty important stuff going on under the hood. The G550 switches from a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V-8 to Mercedes’ new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8. Output increases from 388 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque to 416 horses and 450 lb-ft of torque, and Mercedes says fuel economy improves by 17 percent as well. The G63 AMG model’s twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 also gets a power boost from 544 to 563 horsepower while torque remains the same at 560 lb-ft. Finally, 2016 marks the return of the G65 AMG. Powered by a 6.0-liter V-12, the G65 produces a whopping 621 horsepower and a stump-pulling 738 lb-ft of torque.

Despite the mild upgrades, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz G-Class comes with a healthy price hike. The G550 jumps $4,500 to $120,825, the G63 AMG adds $2,000 for a total of $140,825, and the G65 AMG arrives at a mortgage-like $218,825. If you’re going to sell a vehicle that isn’t a value for the consumer, you might as well make a lot of money on it.

In conjunction with the Frankfurt Auto Show I drove the revised 2016 G550 in and around Frankfurt, Germany, to test the new features and see if I could find any real value in a 36-year-old vehicle with modern mechanicals.

2016 Mercedes-Benz G Class

Road warrior
The G-Class's old school feel is quite evident in the driving dynamics. High-riding and skinny, this ancient SUV leans in turns as much as or more than any vehicle on sale today. The new Sport mode limits some of that lean, but this is still a tall, ungainly vehicle. On the road, most of the controls are balky. In addition to the slushy handling, the steering is almost painfully slow, but it needs to be. If it were quick, the G-Class would feel tippy. The steering has plenty of feel, but what you feel are heavy, lumpy tires meandering into corners. Solid front and rear axles give the G Wagon a busy, bouncy ride, too. At least the brakes are strong and predictable, but in total the driving character is quite off-putting. That's all due to the 36-year-old architecture and the fact that the G-Class was built to be a military off-roader.

On the other hand, power is an asset. The new turbocharged base engine offers a little more pep than the outgoing 5.5-liter V8, launching the G550 from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds versus 6.1 seconds for the 5.5. This engine delivers smooth power with a hint of turbo lag at low rpms and a throaty burble appropriate of a V-8.

The G63 AMG is faster yet, cutting the 0 to 60 mph time to 5.4 seconds and sounding even more menacing. Considering that this is a 5,700-pound truck, both times are very quick. But given that this vehicle is so tall and cumbersome, maybe all that power isn't a good idea. Charge into a corner and you won't have the control of other sportier Mercedes that get such prodigious power.

Both engines work well with the smooth shifting seven-speed automatic transmission, but both will return horrible fuel economy. EPA fuel economy ratings are not yet available, but a 17 percent increase from 12 mpg city/15 highway is still going to be awfully thirsty. Both engines will save a few gallons a fuel a year thanks to a standard Eco start/stop feature that shuts the engine down at stops. This system works seamlessly; the engine starts again very quickly and the restart is virtually undetectable.

A billy goat in a tuxedo
The G-Class was conceived as an off-roader, with a body-on-frame structure, short front and rear overhangs, and the most robust four-wheel-drive system available. It is the only vehicle offered today with front, center, and rear locking differentials. However, Mercedes has outfitted it with luxury appointments. It’s a billy goat in a tuxedo, a rock crawler in an evening gown, and it may be the most capable off-roader offered today. Unfortunately, the Beverly Hills wives and rap star wannabes who buy it will never know what it can really do.

As part of our rainy off-road drive, we tackled a muddy off-road course in G550s equipped with the optional Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S tires. While these on/off-road tires don't have the most aggressive off-road tread, they worked with the G’s various differential locks to ford deep water crossings, conquer steep uphill and downhill runs, and keep plowing forward through mud and over uneven terrain that often put one or two wheels off the ground. Unfortunately, many G-Class owners will never take their vehicles off road, but it would be cool to see a muddy G Wagon proudly displayed in a hedge fund manager's driveway.

2016 Mercedes-Benz G Class

Cramped but quality cabin
Mercedes may charge an arm and a leg for the G-Class , but at least the interior fits the price. Mostly hand-assembled at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria, the interior is decked out with plenty of amenities and quality materials. Standard features include heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, illuminated door sills, ambient lighting, and a Harmon/Kardon surround sound system. Buyers get leather upholstery in black, gray or chestnut, and they can opt for several types of trim, including burl walnut, anthracite wood, carbon, black piano lacquer, champagne white lacquer, poplar satin light brown, and carbon fiber. A variety of designo packages with nappa leather upholstery are offered, as are exclusive full-leather designo packages with diamond-pattern nappa leather upholstery on the seats and doors and smooth leather on the dash.
Mercedes’ COMAND system is also standard. It operates the communications, navigation and entertainment functions. Drivers move around an iPad-like center screen via a control knob on the center console and they can use a set of dashboard buttons to get to various screens quicker. Like other systems of this type, COMAND can complicate some functions but it eliminates several buttons and owners will get used to it within a few weeks.

The G-Class is tall enough that some people will want to use the running boards to get in. Once inside, passengers sit upright on relatively flat seats with short cushions that won't provide much long-trip comfort. The short dashboard and old school ergonomics soon become evident, and a look around the rear reveals that space is lacking for a SUV in 2015.

The problem is the late 1970s design gives the G-Class much less width than today's SUVs. The driver can touch the passenger door pretty easily and the driver's door is so close that you can hit your left elbow on the door when making turns. That lack of width also makes the rear seat far more hospitable for two than three and the rear cargo area smaller than the norm. Thanks to a tall roof, the G-Class still has 45.2 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 79.5 cubic feet with them down, but unless you want to stack stuff high, this space won't be nearly as useful as the 82.8 cubic feet in the 78-inch wide Land Rover Range Rover. The tailgate also opens like a door instead of a liftgate, and it has an awfully skinny aperture. The cargo area is finished out nicely, though.

Bottom line
The updates Mercedes-Benz has made to the 2016 G-Class are positive, improving power and fuel economy, and adding a touch of stability, while coping with the limitations of the vehicle's 1970s design. It remains one of the world's best off-roaders and a status symbol for people who like to show off their bankroll. However, the old-school design means the G-Class is best thought of as a third vehicle for well-healed buyers who might want to spend a weekend at a luxury campsite once a year. With its $120,000-plus pricetag, cramped interior, and old-school trucky handling, the G-Class may be a hip and sexy truck, but it isn’t a wise choice for anyone.

VW - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - 2016 Volkswagen Passat Gets Visual Tweaks, More Tech And Sporty R-Line Package - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2016 Volkswagen Passat

Obviously, the reveal of the Passat isn't why the automotive universe is talking about Volkswagen these days.
That said, the show must go on, and the company revealed its 2016 Passat at an event in Brooklyn, New York on Monday night. The mid-size sedan  gets new front and rear clips aimed at giving it a more aggressive appearance, though the changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary.
Up front, the hood has a pronounced bulge, the headlights are narrower, and the grille's four bars are thicker. The trunk, window arches and bumpers also get some new chrome bits. LED head- and taillights—the first on a VW sedan—round out the exterior changes.

Another first is the availability of a sporty  R-Line variant of the Passat, which will feature unique rocker panels, a distinctive black-accented grille and a new rear diffuser, along with 19-inch wheels.

Under the hood, three engine options will be available, the 1.8-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder, the 3.6-liter V-6 VR6, and yes, the 2.0-liter TDIturbocharged four-cylinder diesel.

More pronounced differences are found inside the cabin, which features a new instrument panel and center stack, including a standard rearview camera. A touchscreen utilizing VW's MIB II infotainment is also standard, and it will allow for swiping and pinch-zooming, as is found on mobile phones. Proximity sensors—which sense hand position—will help keep the system in a state of readiness, and the integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will also contribute to the passenger compartment's updated feel.

Available driver aids include Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Warning, and a Parking Steering Assistant.
When equipped with the 1.8 TSI and an automatic transmission, the 2016 Passat will start at $22,440, not including destination. Full EPA figures haven't been announced, but early estimates put the 1.8-liter models at 38 MPG on the highway.

Pricing for higher spec variants will be revealed before the end of the year.

Audi - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - 2017 Audi R8 First Drive - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2017 Audi R8 front 3/4 view

You might think the new Audi R8 is a Lamborghini in a business suit. You'd be wrong; the Huracán is an R8 in a Heinlein shock trooper suit. This is the most raucous, rowdyAudi yet, and it's most certainly a supercar – even when parked next to its bawdier Italian cousin.

Although the Huracán has been on the street for nearly a year now, the new R8 and the Lambo were developed in parallel. Audi handled most of the engineering workload, with the Huracán receiving Lamborghini's styling and tuning finesse on top of its Audi-built V10 engine and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The R8 gets Audi's motorsports-inspired best. Tally it all up and you have two very different cars built from very similar components.

Of course, that could also be said of the R8 and its racing doppelgänger, the R8 LMS, the racecar built for WEC endurance racing. That car, in fact, is more closely related to the R8 than is the road-going Huracán – the wheelbases are the same, 50 percent of the parts are shared, and the bodies-in-white are built on the same line. The racecars are pulled off line for occasional tweaks or additions, then slotted back in to run through most of the same workflow as the R8s that will eventually end up on the streets.

Like a new pair of your favorite shoes, the new R8 is familiar and foreign at the same time.
This development program pulls from the best of a legendary supercar brand's flair for presence and idiosyncrasy. It also takes lessons from the company's customer racing effort, as well as Audi's own impeccable taste in road manners and clean, elegant design. The end result is an inspired supercar with daily-driver comfort and a surprisingly aggressive side.

Like a new pair of your favorite shoes, the new R8 is familiar and foreign at the same time. It's more comfortable and compliant on the street, thanks to a new chassis that's 40 percent stiffer, allowing for a more forgiving suspension tune. The completely reworked 5.2-liter V10 engine has a Great White bite to go with its Rottweiler bark, but only after you provoke it from polite mode with a press of either the Drive Select button or the exhaust sound switch.

The seats are comfortable – that can be said for both the standard sport seats or optional carbon-shell, race-style buckets. Wrapped in a cabin that's much more futuristic and forward-looking than the last R8, the overall driving experience is refined, luxurious, and high-tech.

Audi's new MMI system offers impressive processing power and some groundbreaking new features.
This is more than just a comfy supercar, however. Audi's new MMI system – along with the virtual cockpit, as debuted at the 2015 CES in a prototype Audi TT cabin – powers the R8's instrument-panel-mounted infotainment system, offering a very different experience while adding impressive processing power and some groundbreaking new features. At 12.3 inches (1,440 by 540 pixels), the screen in the instrument cluster is large, high-resolution, sharp, and rich with color. In our driving, we never experienced any significant wash-out or visibility issues; Audi has sorted the display. An NVIDIA Tegra 30 processor with 2 GB working memory handles the 3D graphics, Google Earth maps display, and other visual elements. The high-powered graphics processor makes for a beautiful, computer-like experience, with no perceptible lag or hesitation in any of the transitions or animations.

Without a separate display for navigation, the instrument panel has to do double duty. At first, this can be a bit disconcerting. But with just a few miles of use, it becomes intuitive and actually quite handy, having all off the information you need for both typical driving and finding your way to new destinations in one central location, just below your line of sight.

The virtual cockpit screen, paired with detailed Google Earth maps, provides an unmatched level of detail for Audi's navigation, which in turn enables some unique abilities. At a racetrack, for example, the virtual cockpit display can show you every turn, along with a live display of your R8's position on the track. A performance mode view offers a large, central tachometer display, which shows shift points in the background color when the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox is being shifted in manual mode – a very handy visual reference that leverages the driver's peripheral vision to make sure you never overshoot the 8,500-rpm redline.

The V10 Plus gets 610 horsepower, 413 pound-feet of torque, and a carbon spoiler.
We put that performance mode view to good use, both on the streets around Faro, Portugal, and on the track at the Autódromo Internacional Algarve, also known at the circuit at Portimão. Both the standard R8 V10 and V10 Plus models were on offer at the event, with the V10 limited to street driving, and the V10 Plus available on both street and track. The standard V10 model packs a 540-horsepower, 398-pound-feet version of the 5.2-liter V-10 engine, while the V10 Plus gets 610 horsepower, 413 pound-feet of torque, and a carbon spoiler among its upgrades.

Whether you're in the V10 or the V10 Plus, choice of driving modes including the standard Dynamic, as well as a customizable Individual setting. But the real performance mode comes with a simple press of the checkered flag button, which puts the R8 into Race setting. This increases the headroom allowed on the slip and yaw profiles, meaning the traction and stability controls are much less intrusive – so uninstrusive, in fact, that you can easily spin the car if you're not careful. Part of that spin-able behavior owes to the fact that the new R8 is much more a classical mid-engined car than its predecessor, especially when pushed to the limits on track.

Where the previous R8 tended to wag the tail under both straight-line and trail braking, transitioning to understeer at steady state and even more understeer when back on the power at corner exit, the the new car's default mode is oversteer. It's a very gentle and predictable oversteer, however, especially under light trailing brake pressure at corner entry, allowing the car to get right down to the apex with ease.

If anything, you can under-drive the R8 and still end up being among the fastest at a typical club track day.
Holding the line in longer corners is a matter of balancing the car on the nose with the throttle; it defaults to neutral, consistent cornering. Going back to throttle for corner exit, the Quattro all-wheel-drive system channels most of the power rearward, leaving the front tires to keep the desired line all the way to track out, with very little (and in some cases, absolutely no) understeer.

It's a remarkable change, and clearly both a result of the improved aluminum/carbon fiber chassis and the Audi engineers' choices in tuning the car's behavior at the limit. Offering a car this balanced, this controllable, demonstrates a surprising amount of faith in the typical R8 buyer, as access to all of this razor-sharp handling comes with the press of a single button. Bravo, Audi.

But it's not just mid-engine finesse with the new R8. If anything, you can under-drive the R8 and still end up being among the fastest at a typical club track day, thanks to the car's phenomenal acceleration, which feels even stronger than its estimated 3.2-second 0-60 sprint (in V10 Plus form). Get the car pointed down toward the apex, mash the right pedal, and a giant's hand shoves you into the next braking zone before you know it.

2017 Audi R8

On track, the V10 Plus' 70 extra horsepower is welcome, and entirely usable. On the street, it can be a bit overwhelming.
You can't go wrong with either version of the R8. The standard V10 actually feels a bit more sorted and cohesive on the street, its slightly reduced output making it a bit more approachable and less fear-inducing when sharing the road with the unknown and unpredictable. On track, the V10 Plus' 70 extra horsepower is welcome, and entirely usable. On the street, it can be a bit overwhelming, gathering speed more quickly than you can safely use, requiring the driver to hold back, tempering their aggression with a healthy dose of sanity.

American pricing of the 2017 Audi R8 hasn't yet been released, as the car won't arrive on our streets until the spring of 2016, most likely in March or April. European pricing will start at 165,000 euros for the standard V10 model, and 187,400 for the V10 Plus when the car launches for retail sale this fall.

With its high-tech infotainment system centered on the driver, much more daring interior, and familiar-but-sharper exterior, the 2017 Audi R8 is much more than a childhood caricature; it's a complete driving system. Whether you want a supercar for the daily grind or a subtler, more tasteful (but still murderously fast and sexy) extravagance for the occasional night out, track day, or canyon run, you can't go wrong with the new Audi R8 – provided, of course, you're more Stranger In A Strange Land than Starship Troopers.
