The Audi RS 6 has turned 20 years old. Audi put out a press release Tuesday recounting the history of this performance model, which has been offered as a sedan but achieved iconic status in Avant wagon form.

At the turn of the 21st century, Audi was in the midst of a motorsports push that would see it become the dominant manufacturer at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and it wanted to capitalize on that with an expanded lineup of performance road cars. Having just transformed the A4 into the RS 4, Audi decided to give the bigger C5-generation A6 the same treatment.

Launched in 2002, the C5 Audi RS 6 used a 4.2-liter V-8 from the S6, but with added twin turbochargers and tuning by Cosworth. It produced 444 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, propelling the inaugural RS 6 from 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds. Top speed was electronically limited to 155 mph. A later Plus version boosted output to 473 hp (torque remained unchanged) and raised the top speed to 174 mph.

Manufactured in sedan and Avant body styles, the C5 RS 6 was only sold as a sedan in the United States, and only for the 2003 model year. Production was limited to just 860 units, and those would be the only examples of the RS 6 to make it to the U.S. for some time.

Audi launched the second-generation C6 RS 6 in 2008, this time with a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V-10 producing 572 hp and 479 lb-ft. However, the C6 was only able to shave 0.1 second off the C5's 0-62 mph time, and the same electronically-forced speed limits remained.

The C6 was only sold for two years, and was never imported to the U.S. We did get an S6 sedan with the naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V-10 from the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo supercars, though.

Audi went back to eight cylinders for the C7 RS 6, which appeared in 2013. The C7's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 produced less horsepower (552 hp) but more torque (516 lb-ft) than the V-10, and the C7 was substantially quicker, reaching 62 mph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds. It also boasted a 190-mph top speed. Available only in Avant wagon form, the C7 RS 6 was not sold in the U.S.

The RS 6 finally returned to the U.S. for the 2021 model year in redesigned C8 Avant guise. Launched internationally in 2019, the C8 RS 6 Avant again uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, this time producing 591 hp and 590 lb-ft. That gets it from 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds, while the top speed remains unchanged from the C7's 190 mph (cars without carbon-ceramic brakes are limited to 155 mph).

You can now get an RS 6 Avant from an Audi dealer for $117,595 (including destination). That's not cheap, but if you've got the means and want a fast wagon, it might be a good idea to grab one while you can. As the history of the RS 6 shows, once it's gone, you never know when it will be back.

Jaguar is barely hold on, with its global sales in 2021 coming in at just 86,270 units, down 15.8% on the pandemic-affected previous year.

In response, the company is preparing a transformation plan that will see it turn into a purveyor of high-end, high-margin electric vehicles potentially edging close to Aston Martin and Bentley territory.

 The first of these new Jaguars is due on sale in 2025 and none of the current model lines will continue pass that point. A concept is rumored to be in the works for a reveal in late 2024.

 Jaguar remains tight lipped on what its future lineup will be like but Autocar, citing insiders, reported on Wednesday that a trio of SUVs is coming. The trio is alleged to include two- and four-door mid-size offerings, to be positioned as separate models, plus a full-size offering. And the price of entry will likely fall above 80,000 British pounds (approximately $97,500), according to Autocar.

A common platform, dubbed Panthera, is being developed in-house, albeit with partner firms like Magna and Nvidia. Magna, which builds Jaguar's I-Pace under contract, is helping to develop the powertrain components while Nvidia, which is currently working with a lot of car companies, is helping to develop connectivity and self-driving aspects.

 Sadly, there's no word on a sports car. Jaguar's participation in Formula E and its string of Vision Gran Turismo concepts suggest the idea isn't dead at the company, though it's possible the plan is to build a solid financial base before introducing a niche model like a sports car.
