Range Rover - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Land Rover Defender V-8 conversion marks 70th anniversary - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

It was 70 years ago that the Rover company introduced the first Land Rover. The vehicle stayed in production right through to the 1980s when it was replaced by the Defender, which itself finally ceased production in 2016.

Land Rover is expected to celebrate the historic run by revealing a redesigned Defender at the end of the year, but there will also be a series of additional events along the way. For example, we learned a week ago that the automaker will bring back to life a rare pre-production 1948 Land Rover long thought to be lost. Now we've learned that Land Rover will also produce a run of 150 Defender V-8 conversions.

Land Rover Defender Works V8

Known as the Defender Works V8, the vehicle was revealed on Wednesday and is currently available for order, albeit not in the United States since the Defender is no longer officially sold here. Both the shorter Defender 90 and longer Defender 110 body styles are available, with pricing starting at $206,800.

Handling the conversion is the Jaguar Land Rover Classic department, which is led by Tim Hannig.
“The idea of reintroducing a V-8 Defender was something we were discussing as far back as 2014, when we were still building the Defender in Solihull,” Hannig said. “We knew the demand was there for a powerful and fast Defender; the Land Rover authenticity is the ultimate finishing touch for discerning clients purchasing these collector’s edition Defenders.”

That “authenticity” comment is a small dig at the handful of firms that have been building their own Defender V-8 conversions for customers around the globe. Two of the more famous are Kahn Design in the United Kingdom and East Coast Defender of Orlando, Florida.

Land Rover Defender Works V8

While most firms typically pick an LS3 V-8 sourced from General Motors for their converesions, the Defender Works V8 comes with Jaguar Land Rover's own 5.0-liter V-8, in naturally aspirated form. The engine delivers 405 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque and will see the Defender Works V8 hit 60 mph in about 5.6 seconds. The top speed is 106 mph. This makes it the fastest and most powerful Defender ever launched by Land Rover.

Along with the new engine, the vehicle also benefits from an 8-speed automatic, uprated brakes and handling kit (springs, dampers and anti-roll bars), plus exclusive 18-inch diamond-turned Sawtooth alloy wheels and 265/65R18 all-terrain tires. The interior has also been dressed with Recaro seats lined in leather, while the headlights have been replaced with modern LED units.

Jaguar Land Rover Classic is also looking at offering upgrades for existing Defender customers. Among the items being considered are engine upgrades, fast-road suspension, and brake kits.

Bentley - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Bentley Bentayga to tackle Pikes Peak hill climb - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2017 Bentley Bentayga

A hill climb is probably the last place you'd expect to find a Bentley Bentayga, but the ultra-luxury SUV will arrive this coming June to tackle one of the world's most famous events: Pikes Peak.

Bentley announced on Thursday that it's prepping a Bentayga specifically to tackle the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The finer details aren't available just yet, but the Bentayga will be powered by the W-12 engine making 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. The brand also said the SUV's all-wheel-drive and air suspension, complete with an active-roll system, will help deliver results on the 12.42-mile Colorado Springs hill climb.

Not only will the Bentayga run the event, Bentley has record-breaking intentions, too. The brand aims to complete the course, which is comprised of 156 turns, quicker than any SUV that has come before it.
This marks the second major motorsports announcement from the British luxury brand. Bentley also debuted its new Continental GT3 racer in November, based on the 2018 Continental GT road car. The racer will take over following a successful 2017 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup series. The new racer will debut at Monza in April this year.

We expect the Bentayga will be stripped of its luxury appointments to save weight and outfitted with a roll cage, but Bentley hasn't said how the SUV will be prepared. More details on the Bentayga's record hill climb attempt will surface as the June 24 race date nears.

Jaguar - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Say no to B-pillars with Jay Leno and a 1975 Jaguar XJ6 Coupe - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Jay Leno kicks off this latest video with some wise words. He wants to slow things down and focus on a vehicle with a bit less horsepower than he's used to, but a hefty dose of style.

This week the featured machine at Jay Leno's Garage is a 1975 Jaguar XJ6 Coupe. It's a classically cool cruiser that's been lovingly cared for and maintained.

The stance is perfect. British Racing Green paint work is always the right choice on an older Jag, and the overall aura of the car is immediately appealing. It's no wonder that owner Christopher Glancy wound up calling this XJ his own. Upon moving to Los Angeles, Glancy went through a run of American muscle car ownership before settling on this beautiful bit of British iron.

Jaguar has been producing a car with the XJ nameplate since 1968. Chris' 1975 example is a second-generation car, which is typically referred to as a Series II. These were offered with a choice of inline-6 or V-12 engines. Glancy's car is fitted with the 6-cylinder, which might just be one of the cleanest versions you'll find in an older Jag. The engine bay is immaculate.

On the inside, a slightly modern looking steering wheel was swapped out in favor of the more fitting wood-rimmed tiller. It fits the character of the XJ. Our favorite part though is the lack of B-pillars. Anytime you have a coupe with rimless side glass and no pillar breaking up the lines, you wind up with a perfect profile. This XJ is no exception and would certainly make for an excellent cruising machine on a cool California Sunday afternoon.

Grab a cup of tea. Click play on the video above. Then sit back and smile as Jay takes in all aspects of a clean old Jag coupe.

BMW - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - BMW 8-Series leaked - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

BMW 8-Series leaked - Image via Bimmerpost

The first photos showing an undisguised version of BMW's modern 8-Series coupe have hit the web.
The photos were posted to the Bimmerpost forum and reveal what appears to be an 850i model equipped with an M Performance body kit. The photos show the car from the front and the rear and inside as well.
Overall, it looks like BMW is going with a very modern and edgy design for the new 8-Series, including a much more aggressive take on the signature kidney grille. The thick chrome-plated bars of the grille does remind one of the character Jaws from the James Bond movies. It's a look that was first seen on the 8-Series concept unveiled last spring.

BMW is still out testing prototypes for the 8-Series coupe. The automaker is also out testing an 8-Series Convertible, and it’s possible we’ll see a fastback sedan at some point. The latter, if built, would likely be referred to as an 8-Series Gran Coupe.

The 8-Series replaces BMW’s 6-Series coupe which no longer forms part of the 6-Series lineup. BMW has confirmed the reveal will take place in 2018. A debut at the Geneva auto show this March is a strong possibility. We’ll likely see it on sale in 2019, as a 2020 model.

All BMW is willing to say about the car is that it will provide a blend of sporty dynamics and luxury. CEO Harald Krüger described it as a “true luxury sports coupe” and a “slice of pure automotive fascination.”

Audi - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Audi tests smart energy grid in new trial - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Audi smart energy grid trial

Audi is conducting a trial of what the automaker calls a “virtual power plant.” It's a system where thousands of individual energy sources, typically homes with solar panels, can be connected so that energy can flow where it's needed.

In the trial, households with solar panels and battery storage systems located in Audi's home of Ingolstadt, Germany are all connected via software designed to distibute the collected energy intelligently among the households.

Distributing the energy is done via the existing power grid using the software, which was developed by Swiss startup Ampard. The software distributes the energy based on demand from households, whether it be for powering a home or charging up an electric car. It's something that's already done at major cities using energy generated at power plants, but this is the first time it's being done with energy generated at individual homes.

The result is balancing energy to those households in the network. In other words, the network accounts for the fluctuations between the amount of energy generated and the amount actually used. And because there's less reliance on energy from outside the network, the households' energy costs are reduced.
“We are playing a pioneering role with the prequalification of the balancing-power market—enabling producers to feed power into the grid, as part of the pilot project,” Head of Sustainable Product Concepts at Audi Hagen Seifert said in a statement. “That is now for the first time also possible down at the level of individual households.”

Development of the virtual power plant is just one measure Audi is taking as it gears up for the launch of volume electric cars. The automaker has also built wind farms, with the energy from these being fed into the existing grid but also to create synthetic fuels.

Aston Martin - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Aston Martin could build electric sports car to rival Tesla Roadster - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2019 Aston Martin Vantage

The 2020 Tesla Roadster revealed late last year could face competition from a brand that knows a thing or two about sports cars. Auto Express reported today that Aston Martin is considering an all-electric sports car to rival the forthcoming Roadster.

The electric sports car could push Aston Martin into greater realms of electrification and challenge Tesla's Roadster, which the Silicon Valley-based carmaker claimed will be the quickest accelerating car in the world. However, an ambitious project like an electric Aston Martin sports car likely won't come until later next decade. The British brand will be busy launching a new car every year through 2022, and in the process, Aston Martin will heavily expand its electrification options.

CEO Andy Palmer confirmed Aston Martin will not introduce plug-in hybrids, however, and future cars will employ 48-volt mild-hybrid systems. The ultimate goal, he said, is to offer pure electric cars without the complexity plug-in hybrids bring from an engineering standpoint. In the near term, the Rapide sedan is expected to be released as an electric car this year.

Should Aston Martin give an all-electric sports car the green light, it will have to rival the 2020 Roadster's pretty incredible specs. Tesla claimed the next-generation Roadster will dispatch the quarter mile in 8.8 seconds, and feature a top speed of 250 mph. A 200 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack is slated to provide 620 miles of range and feed two motors in the rear and one up front for all-wheel drive. Palmer didn't seem worried about his brand's capability, though.
2020 Tesla Roadster

Palmer named three key areas of development for electric cars: weight, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance. "Sports car manufacturers, and us in particular, are really good at mastering [these areas]." He added Aston Martin's expertise gives it a clear advantage over Tesla to build a lightweight electric sports car.

The hypothetical electric sports car could ride on Aston Martin's aluminum-intensive platform that the DB11 and Vantage currently use. The brand engineered the architecture to support electric powertrains for the future, and it could very well be the basis for a proper Tesla Roadster rival.

Range Rover - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Jaguar Land Rover invests in self-driving startup Voyage - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Voyage self-driving car prototype

There's no shortage of startups looking to be among the first to develop safe and reliable self-driving systems to power fleets of potentially lucrative self-driving taxis.

Among them is America's Voyage, which was formed by ex-engineers of Apple and Alphabet and on Thursday received $3 million in funding from Jaguar Land Rover. This brings the company's funding to date to about $20 million.

Voyage has already deployed its self-driving cars in large retirement villages and is licensed to test them on Californian roads in 2018. The company is refining its technology and service with feedback from residents of the retirement villages, located in San Jose, California and Orlando, Florida.

Jaguar Land Rover is also developing its own self-driving technology. The British automaker last November started testing self-driving cars with Level 4 capability on public roads in the United Kingdom. Level 4 means the vehicles can operate on their own but only in select conditions.

The news comes just as General Motors unveiled a self-driving car devoid of a steering wheel and pedals. GM says the cars will be providing lifts on public roads as early as 2019. Waymo (previously the Google Self-Driving Car Project) is thought to be months from offering a self-driving car service, though its cars still feature conventional controls. The same is true for nuTonomy, which has self-driving cars offering rides on a few streets in Boston and Singapore.
