BMW's X2 compact crossover makes a great alternative to the premium hatchbacks typically found outside the U.S., due to its compact size in combination with a tall seating position and higher ground clearance. It was a new addition to the lineup here for 2018, and soon a redesigned version will arrive.

A prototype for the next generation X2 has been spotted again, and hints at a design that's more coupe-like than the slanted-roof current generation. Other details like the headlights and grille are similar to the designs found on the redesigned 2023 BMW X1, whose underpinnings the vehicle shares.

Those underpinnings are the latest version of BMW Group's FAAR platform for front-wheel-drive vehicles. We know the new X1 is longer and wider than the model it replaces, and the same will likely be true for the new X2.

The interior design should be a match with the interior in the new X1, which likewise matches the interior in the latest 2-Series Active Tourer sold overseas. There's no longer a traditional hood over the instrument cluster. Instead, the instrument cluster stands alone as a floating screen and is joined by a second screen for the infotainment system. The traditional upright gear lever has also been replaced by a small nub integrated in an extension of the center armrest.

The X2 is currently available in the U.S. in X2 xDrive28i and X2 M35i grades, which come with 2.0-liter turbo-4s delivering 228 and 302 hp, respectively. Expect the same grades for the new X2, but perhaps with small increases in horsepower. The new X1 xDrive28i grade has been confirmed with 241 hp. It is also confirmed with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive, features that should also appear in the new X2.

The current X2 offers an xDrive25e plug-in hybrid grade overseas, though the jury is still out on whether such an option will be offered on the new X2. It also isn't clear whether we'll see an electric iX2, though the new X1 has spawned an electric iX1 with 308 hp and a claimed 250 miles of range. The electric X1 hasn't been confirmed for U.S. sale, though.

Look for the new X2 to arrive in late 2023 or early the following year as a 2024 model. Pricing should start in the low-$40,000 bracket.

While there have been rumors of an X2 convertible, such a body style no longer appears to be in the pipeline.

Porsche engineers are out testing prototypes for an updated 911 range, and a new one has been spotted.

Previously we brought you spy shots of prototypes for the updated 911 Turbo911 Turbo S, and 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Our latest shots show what's likely to be the updated 911 Carrera coupe.

The current 911 arrived in 2019 as a 2020 model, initially in Carrera and Turbo guises. Given the typical seven- to eight-year lifespan of the 911, this updated version should arrive in 2023, likely as a 2024 model.

Tweaks to the styling will be mild, with the prototype revealing a new front fascia design sporting larger intakes with vertical flaps that are likely active. There's also an additional sensor located under the license plate, and new internals for the headlights. The turn signals have also been integrated with the headlights, instead of residing on the front fascia like the current design.

Moving to the rear, the taillights have a new design with double bars. We also notice a new design for the engine's side vents, as well as exhaust tips mounted closer to the center. This backs rumors that a new engine might be introduced with this update, specifically a bigger, naturally aspirated unit like Porsche's 4.0-liter flat-6 offered in the 718 range, which starts at 394 hp. The current Carrera models come with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-6, which starts at 379 hp.

There is some substance to the rumors. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche's chief engineer for the 911, said in a 2020 interview that new emissions regulations planned for Europe around the middle of the decade will see bigger engines return in favor of downsized units. The new rules are apparently aimed at matching lab-tested fuel economy with real-world figures.

We also expect a hybrid option to be added to the Carrera with this update. The updated Turbo should also have a hybrid option.

Interior shots reveal a revised dash design. Porsche is planning to add a bigger infotainment screen and a new instrument cluster that will be fully digital, like in the Taycan. The current design sticks with an analog gauge for the center-mounted tachometer. It seems there won't be a redesign for the dual-clutch automatic's current gear lever, which resembles an electric shaver.

Range Rover - Repair and Service Redwood City - Defender special edition marks 75th anniversary of the first Land Rover - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2023 Land Rover Defender 75th Limited Edition

When the original Series 1 Land Rover made its world debut at an auto show in Amsterdam in 1948, few would have thought the vehicle would go on to spawn an internationally recognized brand for luxury SUVs decades later.

It's now been 75 years since the debut and Land Rover has remembered its humble beginnings with a special Defender, the vehicle in Land Rover's current lineup closest in spirit to the Series 1.

It's called the 2023 Defender 75th Limited Edition, and it's being offered for a limited period. It is available in 2-door 90 or 4-door 110 body styles and comes with an exclusive shade of green paint called Grasmere Green. The paint also extends to the standard 20-inch wheels, including the center caps.

There are also some Grasmere Green accents in the cabin, which are combined with seats in black trim. There's also a material called Robustec, which Land Rover describes as its most robust fabric available in the Defender. It features on the center console.

The Defender 75th Limited Edition is offered exclusively in the Defender's P400 grade, meaning a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 in mild-hybrid configuration. It's good for 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic and four-wheel drive complete the package.

All Defender 75th Limited Editions also come equipped with a folding fabric roof, 14-way driver and front passenger seats with heating and memory function, a heated steering wheel, 3-zone climate control, a surround-view camera system, Meridian premium audio, a head-up display, a wireless charger for mobile devices, and an 11.4-inch infotainment screen.
