Audi has been spotted testing a prototype for an updated Q7, and the tester appears to be at a late stage of development.

The current Q7, the second generation of the nameplate, arrived for the 2017 model year and was given its first update for 2020. Normally, a prototype for a redesigned model would appear at about this time, but with Audi planning to transition to a full-electric lineup this decade it makes sense for automaker to continuing updating the current internal-combustion model until an electric successor arrives.

This updated three-row SUV is expected to arrive late this year or early next, likely as a 2024 model. Its arrival should coincide with that of an updated Q8, prototypes for which are also out testing. Both SUVs are expected to adopt design features introduced on the recently revealed 2023 Q8 E-Tron, the updated version of the E-Tron electric SUV.

The prototype for the updated Q7 features new fascias at both ends and front intakes with a design similar to that of the Q8 E-Tron. The grille is also new, as are the lights at both ends.

Tweaks should also be made to the cabin, which, like the Q8 E-Tron's cabin, should feature new trim materials, including the increased use of recycled materials in some areas.

It isn't clear what updates, if any, will be applied to the mechanicals. The Q7 is currently offered in the U.S. with 248-hp 2.0-liter turbo-4 and 335-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 options, plus a 500-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 reserved for an SQ7 variant.

As mentioned above, Audi plans to transition to a full-electric lineup this decade. The automaker has already confirmed its last internal-combustion model will be launched in 2026, meaning the next Q7, if there is one, will most likely be an EV.

The Porsche Cayenne, which shares a platform with the Q7, is also due to receive an update for 2024. The Cayenne is also then expected to become an EV when it finally receives a redesign later this decade.

With Audi set to launch its final gas-powered car in 2026, most models in the automaker's lineup in the coming years will transition to electric power, including those from the Audi Sport division.

Audi Sport is responsible for S- and RS-badged Audis (as well as the R8 supercar), and there are already electric models carrying both badges in the form of the E-Tron S and RS E-Tron GT.

Our latest spy shots show what's thought to be another electric RS model, an RS 6 E-Tron based on the upcoming A6 E-Tron.

The prototype may look like some of the testers for the regular A6 E-Tron but a closer inspection reveals details like flared wheel arches and an uprated brake package with red calipers.

concept of the A6 E-Tron shown in 2021 packed a 100-kwh battery and dual-motor powertrain good for 469 hp and 590 lb-ft. Output in the RS 6 E-Tron should at a minimum match the maximum 621 hp available in the gas-powered RS 6 Avant.

Interestingly, there's also likely to be an RS 6 Avant E-Tron, since Audi has hinted that the regular A6 E-Tron will have an Avant wagon option with the A6 Avant E-Tron concept shown last March.

The A6 E-Tron, and thus any RS version, has been designed around Volkswagen Group's new PPE modular EV platform for high-volume luxury models. The platform debuts later this year in the Audi Q6 E-Tron crossover, which is also expected to spawn an RS variant.

The A6 E-Tron is also due out later this year. The RS version will likely trail it by about six months to a year.
