The Audi A6 has been turned into an electric vehicle but Audi fans looking for a gas-powered midsize sedan will still have an option in the future.

The automaker is cooking up a new A7 sedan for the segment and a camouflaged prototype has been spotted.

The current A7 is offered exclusively as a liftback, except in China where a stretched A7 sedan is also available. For the next generation, there will be both a sedan and a wagon, and this time the sedan should be offered globally.

Prototypes for the new A7 wagon, a body style Audi calls the Avant, have been spotted on multiple occasions in the recent past but this is the first time the new A7 sedan has been spotted.

The first members of the new A7 range are expected to debut next year. Those that reach the U.S. should arrive as 2026 models. In addition to the sedan, the wagon should also reach the U.S., though perhaps only in high-performance RS 7 Avant and soft-roader A7 Allroad guises.

Audi hasn't mentioned plans for the new A7, but expect the automaker to use the Volkswagen Group's PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) platform designed for cars premium cars with gas and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The platform made its debut in the new Audi A5.

The prototype for the A7 shows a sportier, more sculpted design than the outgoing A6. A large, protruding grille sits up front, while at the rear are wide, muscular hips that appear to integrate side vents below the taillights. Interestingly, it looks like Audi also plans a return to exposed exhaust tips, though only on one side of the rear fascia in the regular models.

BMW - Repair and Service Redwood City - BMW announces limited run of its Skytop V-8 roadster concept - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

BMW Skytop

BMW's Concept Skytop unveiled in May during the 2024 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy is headed for production, the automaker said on Friday.

Just 50 examples are planned, and all build slots are already claimed. A price tag wasn't announced.

The Skytop is likely based on the platform of the 8-Series Convertible, and BMW has confirmed it runs the same 617-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 fitted to the M8 Competition Convertible.

Not a single body panel is shared with the 8-Series, though. Instead, the two-seat Skytop features a unique design inspired by past open-top BMW icons like the 503, 507, and Z8. There's also no conventional convertible roof on the Skytop; instead, the car features a targa design with roof panels that need to be manually removed.

BMW only last year built a limited run, again 50 examples, of a modern 3.0 CSL based on the platform of the 4-Series. And the automaker's design chief, Adrian van Hooydonk, said at the reveal of the Skytop that the automaker is open to similar projects in the future.

While the practice of building limited-production models using existing platforms has been commonplace at exotic brands like Ferrari and Rolls-Royce for years, more mainstream luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have recently started exploring the potential. Mercedes plans a series of limited-production models, which it calls the Mythos series, and the first member will be a speedster based on the platform of the SL-Class convertible.
