During the reveal of BMW’s
M4 GTS earlier this year, the German automaker confirmed that the car managed
to lap the Nürburgring race track in a time of only 7:28. Now we know that the
exact time was 7:27.88 and we have video footage of the epic run, with included
commentary from BMW M engineer Joerg Weidinger.
In case you’ve forgotten, the M4 GTS is a hardcore version
of the M4 coupe that debuts BMW new water injection system for
production cars. The system sprays water in both the intake manifold and
directly into the cylinders, where it helps cool the pressurized mix of air and
fuel prior to combustion. This cooling effect makes for more efficient combustion,
leading to increases in both power and efficiency plus other
benefits.
The peak output of the car's turbocharged 3.0-liter
straight-six is now 493 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, which is up
considerably on the stock M4’s 425 hp and 406 lb-ft. Other performance specs
include a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of just under 190 mph.
Sadly, BMW is only building 700 examples of the M4 GTS for
worldwide consumption (300 of these are earmarked for the United States). The
car is priced from $134,200, including a $995 destination charge, but all build
slots are accounted for.
Note, this run was likely achieved prior to the
Nürburgring's operator setting speed limits for certain sections of the track.
The good news is that those speed limits will be removed next year following
the completion
of some safety modifications.
