You may recall that Porsche started out making
sports cars and eventually started making SUVs and crossovers. If rumors are
true, Land Rover is
going to do the same thing, except backwards.
Land Rover reportedly has plans to develop a car, according
to Autocar. The working name for the project is apparently
‘Road Rover’ and I sincerely hope that’s some sort of inside joke, because it’s
also a label that fits how most of the brand’s SUVs are used already, anyway.
It evidently was originally a name the company considered back when the Rover
brand of cars existed.
Here’s the basics from Autocar:
The first production vehicle will be a premium all-electric
model, aimed primarily at markets such as California in the US and China.
The first Road Rover is understood to be a Mercedes-Benz
S-Class rival in terms of outright luxury and interior craftsmanship but with
some ‘all-terrain’ capability. The car will also be tuned for impressive
on-road dynamic performance, taking advantage of the potential delivered by
electric motors.
If the report is true and Land Rover goes through with
something like this, the car is pegged to be introduced at the 2019 LA Auto
Show and go on sale by the end of the decade at around $100,000.
From there, this new lineup of non-SUV-or-crossover Land
Rovers will grow into something god never intended. Land Rover is already
attached at the hip of Jaguar, and apparently this car model is being developed
with the same new platform as the upcoming Jaguar XJ replacement.
You should click over and check out Autocar’s renders,
which are essentially just a smushed Land Rover. In a vacuum, it has the
potential to be another one of those sexy, rugged wagon-types alongside the
Volvo V90 Cross Country and, presumably, like that weird electric crossover
Aston Martin has been working on. But as a Land Rover or Road Rover or whatever
they end up calling it, why isn’t it just a Jaguar XJ wagon?
Whatever. Rich people are going to rich people and brands
are going to brand. We’ll probably end up hating ourselves for liking it in the
end.
