BMW - Repair and Service Redwood City - BMW recalls over 720,000 vehicles due to water pump short circuit - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2018 BMW X5

BMW has issued a recall spanning nine of its vehicle lines, though only certain model variants built between the 2012 and 2018 model years are affected.

The cause of the recall, which affects 720,796 individual vehicles in the U.S., is an electrical plug connector for the water pump.

The affected vehicles include certain model variants from the 2014-2016 2-Series, 2012-2016 3-Series, 2014-2016 4-Series, 2012-2016 5-Series, 2012-2015 X1, 2013-2017 X3, 2015-2018 X4, 2016-2018 X5, and 2012-2016 Z4.

According to the recall notice, liquid collecting on the intake air hose could drip onto the water pump's plug connector, and over time this could lead to liquid making its way into the plug. Liquid in the plug could result in a short circuit, causing overheating and possibly a fire.

BMW said it was aware of 18 customer complaints, concerns or field instances but has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.

The remedy requires dealers inspecting and replacing if necessary the water pump and plug connector. A shield will also be installed to divert any liquid that might drop onto the water pump.

Owners will be notified by mail from Oct. 4 with a request to bring their vehicle into a BMW service center. Anyone looking for further information can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or visit BMW's recall page.
