BMW in March confirmed plans to add a
convertible version of its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, having
first previewed the car in concept form as far back as the 2012 New
York auto show.
Sadly, the i8 convertible, which may be called an i8 Spyder, like the concept, won’t be in
showrooms until 2018.
The information was revealed by BMW CEO Harald Krueger on
Tuesday, Reutersreports.
A launch in 2018 means the open-top car will be arriving
towards the end of the i8’s life cycle. The i8 went on sale in 2014 and is
expected to undergo a mid-cycle update in 2017. Among the
updates is expected to be a boost in horsepower and electric range.
As for a successor, there are rumors BMW will go down the
pure electric route. The automaker is already involved in the Formula
E Championship and is investigating fielding its own team. The automaker has
also hinted at a new flagship model arriving in 2021 that’s meant to be an electric car with self-driving capability.
It’s possible that the new flagship, code-named the iNext, is in fact an i8
successor.
