Get ready to say goodbye to the aging LR4 and hello to the new Discovery.
The handsome SUV makes its world debut this month at the
2016 Paris auto show and will be on sale by mid-2017, arriving as a 2018 model.
Although it’s aimed at soccer moms—it’s Land Rover’s rival
to three-row, seven-seat luxury SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90—it’s
still every bit as capable as its predecessor when heading off-road, as you’ll
discover in these promotional videos.
In developing the Discovery, Land Rover drove prototypes in
more than 20 countries and racked up more than a million miles. Land Rover
describes the SUV as “unstoppable” on any surface, including grass,
mud, rocks, sand, snow and even the race track.
Of course, they had a good starting point as the Discovery
makes use of Land Rover’s aluminum platform found in the Range Rover and Range
Rover Sport SUVs. Known as the Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA), the
platform should also bring significant improvements in efficiency and dynamic
qualities over the LR4 thanks to reduced weight.
The covers will come off the Discovery on September 28, the
eve of the Paris auto show. To learn about some of the other vehicles appearing
at the French event, head to our dedicated hub.
