Mercedes Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Skier Jon Olsson shows off his monstrous 800-hp Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4 - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Jon Olsson isn't just a professional freeskier and ski racer, he's also a horsepower junkie. Why do we say that? Because he owns multiple wild creations that make in excess of 800 horsepower, including one of the most rambunctious Rolls-Royce Wraiths we've ever seen. Now, there's this: his new 800-hp Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4.

Absolute Motors, a performance shop in The Netherlands, once again helped Olsson bring his latest creation to life, though the SUV will return for official dyno numbers in the near future. The 800 hp figure is only an estimate at this time.

We don't have a full spec sheet, but we do know the G500 boasts a raised ride height, a winch, a Brabus carbon fiber snorkel, LED lighting (including police-like blue lighting in the grille), and a police siren that can make various sounds and pierce eardrums. We don't think Olsson will have to worry about being accused of impersonating a police officer. Nothing is subtle about this rig, everyone will see and hear it coming, and no police department would spend this kind of money.

The G500 also features a custom wrap, similar to the black-and-white camo design found on Olsson's Wraith, but this one is much more subtle with flat black and gray inserts.

The rig is fresh from the shop, but Olsson immediately drives it like it was meant to be driven, wading through deep water, tromping through mud, and really going to town on a pile of leaves. The G500 also has a unique name: "Lord Hans the G," named after Olsson's brother. Check out the automotive lunacy in the video above.

Range Rover - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - New Land Rover Defender won’t have retro design - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2011 Land Rover DC100 concept

There’s probably no greater challenge for a designer than redesigning an icon.
And they don’t get more iconic than the Land Rover Defender, a vehicle whose design hasn’t changed much in close to seven decades.

Land Rover was forced to end production of the Defender last year, with the most recent model unable to meet crash safety and emissions regulations.

Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern with DC100 Concepts

Mercedes-Benz has a similar problem with its equally iconic G-Class, though the German automaker has taken the easy route by making its redesigned G-Class almost a direct copy of its predecessor.
Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern will have none of that. Speaking with Automotive News (subscription required), McGovern said the new Defender, expected to debut in late 2018 or early the following year, won’t feature a retro design.

“I am a modernist,” he said. “I'm looking forward, not back.”

McGovern also said that the design of the new Defender had been locked in and that engineers were now working hard to ensure the vehicle is just as capable if not more so than the predecessor.

Last Land Rover Defender is built at famous Solihull plant in the United Kingdom - January 29, 2016

A teaser sketch seen by Automotive News was said to depict a vehicle with a flat roof and squared-off front end, like the original version. Based on McGovern’s comments about retro design, that’s probably all that will be common between the two.

As an indication of how tough the challenge has been, Land Rover in 2011 rolled out the DC100 concept as a potential design for a new Defender. However, the cheap, almost cartoonish look of the vehicle was quickly derided and the design scrapped.

Land Rover has also decided to ditch plans to make the Defender an affordable workhorse along the lines of the Toyota Hilux. Instead, the automaker will adopt the aluminum platform found in the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery. Using this platform means Land Rover can build the new Defender on the same production line as its other PLA-based models. The downside is that the vehicle won’t be as affordable as previously thought.

Jaguar - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Bag a bargain: discounts of up to $30K offered on 2017 Jaguar F-Type - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2017 Jaguar F-Type SVR Convertible

Jaguar’s F-Type has been updated for 2018. The changes are subtle yet provide the stylish sports car with the latest technology and a more refined look. There’s also a new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 base option that has brought the price tag down to $60,895.

The problem is that Jaguar dealers still have a lot of 2017 models on their lots. The 2017 model, whose base option is a supercharged V-6, lists from $62,395.

However, Jaguar’s problem is your gain as with a little arm-twisting you can get a great deal on a 2017 F-Type. We’re talking discounts of up to $30,000 in some cases.

Cars Direct has discovered that Jaguar is offering the discounts in the form of dealer cash incentives, meaning it’s up to the dealer to decide whether the full discount is applied.
2017 Jaguar F-Type SVR Convertible

The discounts start at $10,000 for V-6 models, meaning if the full discount is applied you could drive away in a 2017 F-Type for a low-$50k price tag. There aren’t many V-6-equipped 2017 F-Types available, so finding one will be tough and perhaps impossible.

F-Type R models are eligible for a $20,000 discount and F-Type SVR models are eligible for a $30,000 discount.

The program isn’t being advertised but some Jaguar dealers are already offering the discounts on their 2017 stock. At the time of writing, Jaguar Louisville had a 2017 F-Type SVR available for $100,533, down from a MSRP of $130,533.

Audi - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - This is an Audi S1 on tracks and it looks like fantastic fun - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

When Audi decided to take its diminutive A1, it probably figured that an S variant would soon follow. The automaker probably never considered, however, that someone would buy an S1 and stuff a set of tracks in the wheel wells.

Someone did, and all we can say is that we want to give it a go ourselves.

The EA888-powered hot hatch is rated to produce 227 horsepower here. Quattro all-wheel drive is, as you'd expect, also at play. This S1 must have engaged Quattro plusthough. The tracks allow it to rip down the beach as if the sandy ground were nothing more than your average Whole Foods parking lot.
A blustery beachside day is no match for this blue bomber. Next we'd like to see video of the track-equipped Audi S1 attacking powder-filled hills with a snowboard rack on its roof. After that, we're going to need to see the tracks as an available option in the ordering guide for the RS 3 (since we can't get the S1 here in the States).

Adding a set of tracks to your ride isn't cheap. We've seen estimates as low as $5,000 for a set but the more common number seems to be closer to $20,000. That's a lot of coin to make your ride more tank-like. Still, the S1 shown here in the video certainly seems like it would be a ton of fun in the right environment.

Range Rover - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - 2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport P400e plug-in hybrid first look - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Land Rover’s Range Rover SUVs, for decades the image of inefficiency and excess, are being transformed into some of the cleanest vehicles on the road.

Land Rover is starting with the Range Rover Sport which for the 2019 model year will offer a plug-in hybrid option: the P400e.

Arriving in showrooms next summer, the Range Rover Sport P400e will kick off the transformation of Jaguar Land Rover’s lineup into a fully electrified one by 2020.

The powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 and an electric motor which deliver a combined 398 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor is integrated with an 8-speed automatic transmission which is then connected to the Range Rover Sport’s standard 4-wheel-drive system.

The addition of an electric motor also required a unique calibration for Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 off-road driving modes selector. The new calibration distributes torque from the electric motor, which has no creep speed and maximum torque from zero rpm, to all four wheels. This gives greater control during low-speed off-road maneuvers, Land Rover says.

Land Rover quotes a 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds and top speed of 137 mph, which isn’t bad for a vehicle of this size and scope. A battery of 13.1-kilowatt-hour capacity means owners can also expect about 30 miles of pure electric range, albeit with lower performance since the electric motor is rated at just 114 hp. EPA-rated numbers will be announced closer to the market launch.

The charging port can be found at the front of the vehicle, although the battery is stored at the rear for optimal weight distribution. You can set the vehicle to start charging at a specific time (ideally during off-peak times). A white light in the charging port signifies the vehicle is connected but indicates that charging has not started, while a blue light shows that timed charging is set but not underway. A flashing green signal shows the car is charging, while a solid green light indicates the battery is fully charged.

2019 Land Rover Range Rover Sport PHEV

The Range Rover Sport PHEV’s arrival will trail that of an updated Range Rover Sport lineup being introduced for the 2018 model year. The updated lineup will arrive in showrooms in early 2018, bringing with it revised styling, new technologies and, for the SVR model, more power.

Note, similar updates, including the addition of a plug-in hybrid option, will eventually make their way onto the larger Range Rover.

Mercedes Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4 Squared review: top tax bracket bruiser - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4 Squared

2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4 Squared

“Hey dude, your car is huuuuge!”

We expected that reaction while driving a vehicle with nearly 18 inches of ground clearance through Washington D.C. What we didn’t expect was someone to ask us if it’s a Hummer, though.
Come on! This is definitely not a Hummer. It’s the Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4 Squared. Remember the G63 6x6? This is its smaller, less powerful, but equally nuts sibling.

Or, to answer a question another curious bystander asked us: the G550 4x4 Squared is not merely a G-Class with an aftermarket lift kit.

Hardcore hardware
Mercedes introduced the G-Class back when the cayenne was only a hot, red chili pepper—not a Porsche. Originally designed for the battlefield, the G hovered above the limits of borders and automotive social classes to become the darling of Beverly Hills. Soaring sales and transaction prices encouraged Mercedes to give the R&D department money to test the limits of the G’s appeal with low-volume models like the 4x4 Squared.

The increased ground clearance mostly comes from a set of portal axles, which are the double-decker bus of the axle world. They also make the G appreciably wider than stock, requiring the use of fenders wide enough for a picnic. They’re made out of carbon fiber to keep weight in check. Every little bit helps in a monster truck of an SUV that comes in at 6,500 pounds.

2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4 Squared

Follow the power flow upstream and you’ll encounter three differential locks, a transfer case, a 7-speed automatic transmission, and a 4.0-liter V-8 fitted with a pair of turbochargers. Closely related to AMG’s ubiquitous V-8, it provides 416 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 450 pound-feet of torque at 2,250 rpm.
Pretty fly for a big guy

There’s no mistaking the V-8; its exhaust note is as recognizable as a chorus by The Offspring. The eight pistons roar to life before settling into a smooth idle with a low, menacing burble. From there, it’s surprise after surprise.

The first revelation is that the 4x4 Squared is maneuverable once you get used to its considerable width. At 177 inches long, it’s about seven inches shorter than a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. It’s not nerve-racking to drive in everyday, assuming your commute doesn’t end in parking spaces painted with “Compact Only” under them. Mercedes geared the steering for comfort—not GT-like dynamism—so it’s relatively light and doesn’t require much effort.

The second revelation is its acceleration. Lay your foot in the throttle and the G moves with urgency that you wouldn’t expect from a behemoth like this. It’s all the more amazing because the transmission automatically starts in second gear unless the driver manually selects first by pushing the accelerator pedal all the way down to the floor. Speaking of the 7-speed, its shifts are precise and well-timed but not brisk; it exhibits a “leave me alone, I know what I’m doing” attitude when hunting for the next gear up or down.
The G’s composed handling is the third revelation. We wouldn’t take it on a skid pad, and the built-in sport mode doesn’t do much to change our mind about that, but Mercedes’ suspension wizardry does a remarkable job of keeping body roll in check under normal driving conditions. The trade-off is a firm ride that relays every imperfection into the cabin. The seats stop them before they reach the occupants’ spine.
Colossal Pirelli tires wrapped around 22-inch wheels and a model-specific all-steel suspension system with eight dampers and eight springs help the driver make the most of the G’s ground clearance. We can’t think of many obstacles commonly encountered on the trail (or in the parking lot of a suburban mall, for that matter) the 4x4 Squared can’t drive over with ease. Off the pavement, it only takes a minute to forget about the G’s reputation for decadence and appreciate it for what it is: an old-school, no-nonsense off-roader capable of climbing a glacier in fifth gear.

There was one aspect of this G550 we couldn’t shake: its $225,000 price tag. Meandering through the gorgeous Virginia woods on relatively narrow trails was a masochistic experience for the mind. Traffic—even in D.C.—is a controlled environment. There are lanes, lights, and sometimes even turn signals. You’re on our own out in the forest, at the mercy of any rock, tree, dirt bike, or bear that wants a chunk of your conspicuously elephantine luxo-cruiser. Believe us, we don’t want to find out the cost of a replacement fender.

Room with a view

The flat, vertical dash indicates the G is the real deal, not a quack retro-inspired replica of a once-relevant classic model. Mercedes swathed the cabin in leather and Alcantara, and furnished the dashboard with carbon fiber to add a sporty touch. From behind the wheel, it feels like you’re sitting in a Wrangler that went on a shopping spree after winning the lottery. The materials and the build quality are comparable to the ones in the S-Class, and we love the fantastic pneumatic bolsters integrated into the front seats. This is the kind of attention to detail that elevates the G above other, more modern luxury off-roaders.

It’s not as anachronistic as the now-defunct Land Rover Defender, which only got slightly less rudimentary over time, but there are places where its age becomes glaringly evident. Did SUV buyers in 1979 want a cup holder? Nope. Do they in 2017? You bet. Since there’s no room on the dashboard or on the center console, the front cup holder is a flip-up, basketball net-like gizmo bolted to the transmission tunnel side of the passenger footwell. Of course, it’s made with the finest netting and wrapped in hand-stitched leather. “The best or nothing,” as Mercedes often says.

In-car tech isn’t one of the G’s selling points, which is fortunate because it’s certainly not one of its strong points. The infotainment system consists of a screen on top of the dashboard, a controller knob behind the shift lever, and a series of redundant buttons on the center console. Mercedes could free up a considerable amount of real estate in the cabin by switching to a more user-friendly touch screen-based infotainment system.

Heads or tails?
The Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4 Squared exists in diametrically opposed dimensions. It’s the unprincipled chariot fast-living Russian mobsters drive through Moscow on their days off, the zenith of a model synonymous with self-indulgence. It’s also the culmination of an illustrious 38-year production run that’s going to end in the coming months, a concentrate of Mercedes’ knowledge in the off-roader department. When the current-generation G-Class finally enters the pantheon of automotive history, we’ll prefer to remember the G550 4x4 Squared for its original calling in life.

Jaguar - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Jaguar Future-Type is a familiar vision of a self-driving city car - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

More and more people are predicted to move to large cities in the future. Limited parking spots coupled with congestion will make owning and driving your own car a hassle.

The automakers realize this and seem to have reached a consensus on the solution: self-driving city cars that run around town offering rides. Jaguar is the latest automaker to reveal its take on the idea, following the likes of Chrysler, Honda, Smart and Volkswagen, just to name a few.

Jaguar’s concept is called the Future-Type, and the good news for fans of the brand is that the concept still has a steering wheel. Yes, Jaguar doesn’t see actual driving becoming a thing of the past. Phew.

In the connected world of tomorrow, a fleet of Future-Type-like cars could be available for customers on-demand via a subscription or club membership-like service. The cars would feature flexible seating options, so for example, if you were a small group, you could summon a Future-Type with “social seating,” where the seats face each other.

Jaguar Future-Type concept

Summoning the car is done via Sayer, a steering wheel that doubles as a personal companion and resides with you at all times. Need to be somewhere at a certain time? From the comfort of your living room Sayer will work out when a car needs to arrive at your door and even advise which parts of the journey you might enjoy driving yourself.

Sayer could also play music, book you a table and even know what’s in your fridge. It would also connect with the profiles of other people in your life, such as friends and family, allowing you to easily check what’s happening and stay connected.

Don’t expect to see something like the Future-Type anytime soon. Jaguar envisions it as the type of vehicle we could see around 2040.

“Future-Type offers an insight into the potential for driving and car ownership in the future,” Jaguar design boss Ian Callum said in a statement. “It’s part of our vision for how a luxury car brand could continue to be desirable, in a more digital and autonomous age.”

The Future-Type was unveiled on Thursday at Jaguar’s Tech Fest event in the United Kingdom. The automaker also used the event to announce a commitment to a fully electrified lineup as well as unveil an electric E-Type.

Audi - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - First details on PPE electric car platform for future Audis and Porsches - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Audi e-tron Quattro concept, 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show

Audi and Porsche, both brands from the Volkswagen Group, have developed separate platforms for their first volume electric cars.

Audi’s platform is the C-BEV which is designed for high-riding vehicles and will appear initially in the e-tron SUV on sale in 2018.

Meanwhile, over at Porsche, engineers have developed the J1 platform for a sedan based on 2015’s Mission E concept. It was recently spied testing and is expected on sale in 2019.

Given how fast the technology is advancing, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Audi and Porsche are already working on their next electric car platform, this time with development split between the two brands. The greater collaboration is the result of cost cutting measures at the VW Group following the diesel scandal.

Peter Mertens

Speaking recently with Automotive News (subscription required), Audi R&D boss Peter Mertens revealed that the new platform, code-named the Premium Platform Electric, or PPE for short, will spawn three “model families,” two of which will be for Audi.

Mertens hinted that about 60 percent of the models spawned from the platform would be from Audi and the remainder from Porsche. He also hinted that the platform could be used for vehicles in core segments such as those occupied by the Audi A4 and A6.

Interestingly, Mertens also said Audi is looking to reduce the number of internal combustion engines it currently offers, which again should come as no surprise. He questioned the need for 10- and 12-cylinder engines but said V-8s are here to stay for a while still. He also said diesel will be offered in many markets for a while, too.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume isn’t so supportive of diesels. In July, he said Porsche was evaluating the future of diesel engines and would make a final decision by the end of the decade.

Aston Martin - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Aston Martin DB4 GT Continuation hits the test track - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Old trends often fall out of style as the years go by, but the Aston Martin DB4 GT remains as stylish today as it was decades ago.

In fact, Aston Martin will produce another 25 examples of the special variant of the sports car, and the new ones are appropriately called the DB4 GT Continuation.

Ahead of the new DB4 GT's delivery, Aston Martin provided video of the car undergoing tests at Millbrook Proving Ground in the United Kingdom.

1959 Aston Martin DB4 GT

Like the original cars, the DB4 GT Continuation is true to form with all era-appropriate parts and pieces accounted for. Tadek Marek will provide the car's inline-6 engine, paired to a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine makes 340 horsepower, and since the DB4 GT was a lightweight special, the Continuation weighs only 2,706 pounds.

Inside, the cockpit features an FIA-spec roll cage and a fire extinguisher, since the 25 cars will be for track use only. To ensure owners are ready to drive the cars in anger, each owner will also attend Aston Martin’s 2-year driving program, which features professional instructors and track time at some of the world's best-known circuits.

Not that the DB4 GT Continuation is inexpensive, but they are more affordable than an original DB4 GT. Original models command roughly $3.9 million in the current market, though a DB4 GT Prototype in August sold for $6,750,000 during the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Aston Martin's limited-run of Continuation cars have all been spoken for, each costing $1.9 million.

BMW - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - E30 M3 does hill climb with screaming 440-HP E46 M3 engine - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

You'll often find builders of hot rods and muscle cars talking about upping the displacement on a given engine.

Taking a Ford 390 and turning into a 428, for example. Are there times when destroking an engine is more appealing to increasing displacement? Yes, and we have the perfect example for you in the form of this BMW hill climb beastie.

It's an E30 that finds the S54 engine from an E46 M3 sitting under its hood. Only this unit has been destroked to 3.0 liters instead of the normal 3.2, and it can rev like a superbike. Okay, not quite as fast or as high as a superbike, but it's quite impressive.

The video description says the engine is making 440 horsepower and capable of running up to 9,600 rpm. That's why it's screaming its way up this hill in a Lebanese championship event. This build is the perfect example of a twitchy, manic, high-revving hill climb monster. It's being driven in a way befitting the nature of the car, and it's doing a damn fine job of getting from hill bottom to hill top as quickly as possible.

This particular hill climb event is almost world rally special stage in nature. Make sure you watch through to at least the 1:30 mark because the Bimmer catches serious air over a crest. And if you thirst for more, here's an equally manic clip of a Mitsubishi Evo in a hill climb.

Range Rover - Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Land Rover Is Going To Make A Car: Report - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

You may recall that Porsche started out making sports cars and eventually started making SUVs and crossovers. If rumors are true, Land Rover is going to do the same thing, except backwards.

Land Rover reportedly has plans to develop a car, according to Autocar. The working name for the project is apparently ‘Road Rover’ and I sincerely hope that’s some sort of inside joke, because it’s also a label that fits how most of the brand’s SUVs are used already, anyway. It evidently was originally a name the company considered back when the Rover brand of cars existed.

Here’s the basics from Autocar:

The first production vehicle will be a premium all-electric model, aimed primarily at markets such as California in the US and China.

The first Road Rover is understood to be a Mercedes-Benz S-Class rival in terms of outright luxury and interior craftsmanship but with some ‘all-terrain’ capability. The car will also be tuned for impressive on-road dynamic performance, taking advantage of the potential delivered by electric motors.

If the report is true and Land Rover goes through with something like this, the car is pegged to be introduced at the 2019 LA Auto Show and go on sale by the end of the decade at around $100,000.

From there, this new lineup of non-SUV-or-crossover Land Rovers will grow into something god never intended. Land Rover is already attached at the hip of Jaguar, and apparently this car model is being developed with the same new platform as the upcoming Jaguar XJ replacement.

You should click over and check out Autocar’s renders, which are essentially just a smushed Land Rover. In a vacuum, it has the potential to be another one of those sexy, rugged wagon-types alongside the Volvo V90 Cross Country and, presumably, like that weird electric crossover Aston Martin has been working on. But as a Land Rover or Road Rover or whatever they end up calling it, why isn’t it just a Jaguar XJ wagon?
Whatever. Rich people are going to rich people and brands are going to brand. We’ll probably end up hating ourselves for liking it in the end.

Mercedes Repair and Consignment Sales Redwood City - Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo earns starring role in "Justice League" film - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

The Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept is ready for the big screen after the brand confirmed it will be featured in the upcoming film, "Justice League." The stunning concept car will star alongside Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash, and it will be joined by a handful of other Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

It's unclear how the superheroes will utilize the Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept, but it's certainly fit for a superhero with its futuristic design and gullwing doors—a nod to the classic 300 SL and its gullwing doors.

For its role, Mercedes-Benz had to update the Vision Gran Turismo concept substantially. When it made its debut as part of "Gran Turismo" creator Kazunori Yamauchi's "Vision Gran Turismo" campaign back in 2013 and later at the Los Angeles auto show, the car did not feature an interior. For the film, Mercedes designed and built a full interior with illuminated elements, racing seats, and a virtual dashboard section. The Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo in "Justice League" is also 110 percent larger to accommodate the 6-foot-3 ½ inch-tall Bruce Wayne, played by Ben Affleck. However, Mercedes-Benz ensured the roofline retained its sleek look.

Aside from the Vision Gran Turismo, "Justice League" will feature the G-Class 4x4², which the brand says will play an "integral role" in the film's adventure, as it should with permanent all-wheel drive, a reduction transfer case, three differential locks, and portal axles. Aside from the two wild Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the new E-Class Cabriolet will share some of the silver-screen love as well in the hands of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman.

To coincide with Mercedes-Benz's film support, the brand will roll out a marketing campaign the for the "Justice League" superheroes and its cars. "Justice League" opens in theaters across the United States on November 17.
