Audi - Repair and Service Redwood City - 2022 Audi E-Tron S electric crossover revealed with 3-motor powertrain, $85,895 price tag - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Audi E-Tron S and E-Tron S Sportback

Audi's first volume electric vehicle, the E-Tron crossover, went on sale a couple of years back and has managed to earn plenty of accolades since then.

But a faster, performance-oriented version called the E-Tron S is coming this fall as a 2022 model, with prices starting at $85,895. An E-Tron S Sportback is also coming for the 2022 model year, a prototype for which we tested early last year. It will cost $88,495

The E-Tron S and E-Tron S Sportback are among the first EVs from a major automaker with a three-motor powertrain. Another is the Tesla Model S Plaid. In the Audis, there's a single motor up front and two independent motors in the rear. By having two independent motors at the rear, the system is able to precisely vary torque between the rear wheels. At the front, standard brake-based torque vectoring is relied upon.

The three motors deliver a combined output of 496 hp and 718 lb-ft of torque, though this peak output is only delivered in temporary bursts lasting eight seconds. According to Audi, it will see the E-Tron S and E-Tron S Sportback deliver 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.3 seconds. Top speed on the vehicles is capped at 130 mph.

The battery is the same 95-kilowatt-hour unit found in the regular E-Trons. The battery is rated by the EPA at 204 miles in the standard E-Tron and 218 miles in the more aerodynamic E-Tron Sportback. Audi said the S models will have an EPA-estimated range of 208 miles in standard E-Tron S form while the E-Tron S Sportback will have up to 212 miles of range. The S models operate in rear-wheel-drive mode as much as possible to boost efficiency, with the front motor kicking in when the driver needs more performance or slip is detected, according to Audi.

Beyond the powertrain, the S versions of the E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback benefit from performance tuning of the suspension and steering systems. The vehicles also come with 21-inch wheels (22-inch wheels are available) and uprated brakes. Like most EVs, all E-Tron variants can also recover energy when braking. Depending on the driving situation, the computer controling the braking system decides individually for each axle whether the car will decelerate with the electric motors, the conventional brakes, or both.

The S models are also wider than the regular E-Trons, by almost two inches. This has allowed the engineers to fit wider wheels and tires. Drag remains low however thanks to clever flow-optimized wheel arch extensions and flaps in the front brake ducts which remain closed as much as possible to streamline airflow.

Inside, there are a number of sporty touches including bolstered seats with nappa leather trim. Owners will also find a number of “S” logos around the cabin, along with the top version of Audi's infotainment system. A head-up display is available.

Though it's yet to be confirmed, there are reports the E-Tron will receive a major update for the 2023 model year, and chief among the updates is reportedly more range.

Mercedes - Repair and Service Redwood City - 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 spy shots: Electrified 4-banger replaces V-8 - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Mercedes-Benz in February unveiled its redesigned 2022 C-Class and once again the nameplate will offer a high-performance C63 developed by the Mercedes-Benz AMG skunkworks.

Our latest spy shots show prototypes for the new C63's sedan body style. Prototypes for the wagon, or Estate as Mercedes likes to call the body style, are also out testing. The latest prototypes are still heavily camouflaged but from what we can see, there will be flared wheel arches, large intakes in the front fascia, a pronounced rear diffuser, and four square-shaped exhaust tips.

We can confirm that the outgoing C63's 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 won't make it into the new generation. Instead, the powertrain will consist of the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 found in the latest generation of AMG's compact cars, but with even more power than those cars' maximum 416 hp, and it will also receive a boost from hybrid technology similar to what's used in Formula One, as well as the upcoming AMG One hypercar.

In the new C63, an electric-aided turbocharger will help boost output from the 2.0-liter engine to 442 hp. There will also be an electric motor integrated with the engine in mild-hybrid configuration to power ancillary features, as well as serve as a starter motor. On top of this, there will also be a much more powerful motor (up to 201 hp) at the rear axle to take combined output to a maximum 643 hp. This rear motor will be mated to its own 2-speed transmission.

The 643-hp figure will likely be reserved for a C63S E Performance model. Expect the regular C63 to have around 550 hp, which is still up significantly on the 503 hp of the outgoing C63S.

There will be a weight penalty due to the complex powertrain, however. Expect the hybrid technology to add about 550 pounds to the car and bring its curb weight to almost 4,410 pounds. Part of the hefty load is due to a big battery that should provide a small electric range. One weight-related benefit of the system will be an ideal 50:50 weight distribution thanks to less weight over the front axle compared to the outgoing C63 due to the smaller engine.

Conventional elements like a 9-speed automatic, mechanical all-wheel-drive system, adaptive suspension and drift mode will also likely feature in the new C63.

Performance estimates include 0-62 mph acceleration in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 181 mph. That top speed matches the outgoing C63 but acceleration is about half a second quicker.

Look for the new C63 to debut late this year or early next. A new C43, which may end up being badged a C53, is also coming. Stay tuned
