Land Rover has a new Defender on its hands for 2020. It's the first truly new Defender in over three decades, and represents a huge leap in quality, refinement and technology over its predecessor.

What it doesn't represent just yet is a huge leap in performance over the previous generation, but that will come soon enough as Land Rover is out testing a V-8-powered Defender. Our spy footage shows prototypes sporting quad-exhaust tips and uprated brakes.

So far, the Defender has only been announced with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 rated at 296 horsepower and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 mild-hybrid setup rated at 395 hp. The addition of a V-8 option should see the Defender's output rise to over 500 hp.

The engine being tested here is Jaguar Land Rover's 5.0-liter supercharged V-8. While there were rumors JLR could switch to a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 sourced from BMW, due to the Ford plant where the 5.0-liter is built soon to be shuttered, JLR has confirmed it will move production of the engine in-house.

The swap to BMW's V-8 may still happen, though, possibly when stricter EU7 emissions regulations are introduced in the European Union. That's due to happen around 2026.

The Defender V-8 being tested here is thought to be a regular model. However, JLR's SVO skunkworks is reportedly preparing a high-performance variant to take on the Mercedes-AMG G63, and to a lesser extent any future Ford Bronco Raptor.

While the regular Defender V-8 is expected in late 2021, the SVO version is probably a few years away still.

If you don't need a V-8 in your life, the first examples of the new Defender are already at dealers. The starting price is $50,925, including destination. Only the four-door Defender 110 model is available at present. The three-door Defender 90 has been delayed until 2021 in the United States.

Audi - Repair and Service Redwood City - Audi R8 Green Hell Edition will make US customers green with envy - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

 Audi R8 Green Hell

A motorsports-inspired Audi R8 special edition is coming, but we won't get it in the U.S. Audi announced the R8 Green Hell Edition on Tuesday to celebrate the brand's racing success.

The Green Hell moniker comes from the nickname of Germany's Nürburgring racetrack, but the car isn't just a tribute to the track. Audi has won the Nürburgring 24-hour race five times since 2012 with its R8 LMS race cars, and the Green Hell Edition is a commemoration of that success.

When Audi trademarked the Green Hell name in March, it seemed to indicate the automaker was planning a hardcore, track-focused version of the R8. However, the finished product is a bit milder than expected.

The 5.2-liter V-10, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and all-wheel drive system are unchanged from the standard European-spec R8 Performance. That means 611 horsepower, 0-62 mph in 3.1 seconds, and a top speed of 205 mph, according to Audi.

The main differences are cosmetic. The standard color is Tioman Green, but white, gray, and black are available as well. The front hood, A-pillars, roof, and rear fascia get smatterings of matte black foil. The 20-inch wheels are matte black as well, with red detailing.

On the inside, the Green Hell gets Alcantara trim on the seat center panels, steering wheel, instrument-cluster hood, and armrests. Contrast stitching in a blue-green color called Kailash Fern completes the look.

Audi USA spokesman Mark Dahncke confirmed to Motor Authority that the Green Hell R8 won't come to the U.S., saying "there's more come on the R8 in the U.S., but it won't be the Green Hell Edition at this time."

The R8's future is uncertain, however. Multiple reports have indicated that Audi is considering dropping the supercar, as it looks to cut costs and focus on electrification. Audi may bring a rear-wheel drive R8 to the U.S. before that happens, or it may replace the R8 with an electric car or hybrid. As Dahncke suggested, other versions could be in the works as well.

Jaguar - Repair and Service Redwood City - Jaguar F-Pace-based Lister Stealth is world's fastest SUV - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2020 Lister Stealth based on the Jaguar F-Pace SVR

British sports car marque Lister has launched a tuned version of the Jaguar F-Pace, or to be more precise the V-8-powered F-Pace SVR.

Previously labeled a Lightning, and then LFP, Lister has now revealed the vehicle as the Stealth. It's limited to just 100 examples and priced to start at 109,950 British pounds (approximately $144,770).

This makes only the 707-hp Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and 710-hp Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat more powerful, as far as stock SUVs are concerned, but the Lister is faster than both of them. According to the company, the Stealth needs just 3.6 seconds to sprint to 60 mph and will top out at 195 mph. The next fastest SUV is the Bentley Bentayga Speed which tops out at 190 mph.

Among the powertrain mods are a custom intercooler, upgraded dual supercharger pulleys, a high-flow intake, and a stainless-steel exhaust system with carbon-fiber tips. Lister also installs its own engine mapping.

The Stealth also benefits from a number of chassis and aerodynamic upgrades, plus 23-inch forged wheels from Vossen, and Bridge of Weir nappa leather trim. The interior can be fully personalized, with Lister offering up to 36 color choices and 90 stitching options.

Lister is looking to transform itself into a semi-official performance arm of Jaguar, similar to what Alpina is to BMW and AMG was to Mercedes-Benz before being brought in-house, so we will likely be treated with more Jaguars tuned by Lister in the coming years, including possibly the I-Pace.

The good news is that Lister isn't giving up on its standalone models. The company is still churning out continuation versions of its famous Knobbly race car, and it has a supercar in the works to succeed its Storm supercar of the 1990s.

Developing the new supercar requires a lot of funds, which is why Lister has turned to tuning Jaguars in the meantime. There is also the historical connection as Lister's past cars have typically run Jaguar powertrains, including the Storm which featured a 7.0-liter V-12 from Jaguar's XJR-9 prototype race car. Lister's previous owner also tuned Jaguars, specifically the XJS.
