Mercedes-Benz teamed up with the "Avatar" movie franchise to create a concept car. The Vision AVTR is a unique concept car that looks to the distant future and you can't have it—it's unobtanium.
Introduced Tuesday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Vision AVTR (short for Advanced Vehicle Transformation) explores a new relationship between human, machine, and nature, and depicts a future where cars are symbiotic with their surroundings.

The car interfaces with the driver through a biometric connection. The driver places a hand on the center console and the car recognizes him or her by heartbeat and breathing. The center console also acts as the control unit through which the driver operates the vehicles; there is no steering wheel. It can drive autonomously in Comfort mode or the driver or other passengers can take control.

The driver's palm has a menu of functions that can be selected with gestures. For example, they can view real-time 3D graphics of the fictional world of Pandora. A curved display acts as the dash. It provides a connection to the outside world for all passengers and offers multiple perspectives, including a bird's eye view. The interior has no buttons.

Sustainable materials are used throughout the cabin, such as Dinamica, a synthetic leather, for the upholstery and rattan wood on the floor. The car's haptic seats can monitor breathing and adjust the interior based on the emotional state and stress of the driver and other passengers. Haptic feedback also alerts occupants to objects outside the car. A "Magic Pool" infotainment system is integrated into the back of the front seats. It includes games and augmented reality designed for children.

The design consists of one flowing line that snakes from the exterior through the interior and back out. The body has 33 scale-like "bionic flaps" that can be used to communicate to the outside world via flowing movements. They also act as solar plates to provide the energy needed for sensors,
computer chips, and other components, and they can adjust their orientation to aid vehicle maneuvers. Nature is brought inside through transparent doors that open upward. The center console was inspired by the "Tree of Souls," the most sacred place for the Na'vi people in "Avatar," and it extends through the A-pillars to the roof.

The Vision AVTR is an electric vehicle and Mercedes imagines a battery with graphene-based organic cell chemistry and no rare-earth metals. Mercedes says that the battery is compostable, recyclable, and completely free of fossil fuels. Likewise, the whole car would have zero impact on the planet. Mercedes says the battery would also charge quickly, in just 15 minutes, through conductive charging. With a capacity of about 110 kwh, Mercedes says it would give the car a range of more than 435 miles.

The car features four electric motors mounted near the wheels with a total output of 469 horsepower. Each wheel can be driven individually, and the front and rear axles can be driven in the same or opposite directions. That gives the car the ability to "crab walk" diagonally at an up to 30-degree angle.

Mercedes will certainly not build the Vision AVTR, but its user experience, design, and battery concepts are signposts for a possible future in which cars interface with their occupants and have no negative effect on the planet.

Jaguar - Repair and Service Redwood City - Jaguar's 2019 XJ Collection Special Edition is a send-off to its large sedan - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2019 Jaguar XJ Collection Special Edition

Jaguar is marking the end of production of its current-generation XJ sedan with the 2019 Collection Special Edition, the company announced Tuesday. A limited-production run of just 300 models—the final 300 to roll off the XJ assembly line—the special edition is exclusive to the U.S. market.
The Collection Special Edition is based on the XJL Supercharged model, the long-wheelbase, supercharged (obviously), rear-wheel drive variant. It includes a collection of unique interior and exterior visual cues to set it apart from the standard XJL and XJL Supercharged models.

2019 Jaguar XJ Collection Special Edition

Outside, the Collection Special Edition gets a "Collection" badge on the rear and a unique set of 20-inch wheels finished in satin gray. It is offered in Yulong White or Santorini Black, each with Ebony/Ebony or Mineral/Ivory interiors, or British Racing Green with an Ebony/London Tan interior.
Interior upgrades include oak veneer door panels with laser inlays, a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and metal sill plates marked with "XJ Collection." A plaque reading "XJ Collection One of 300" will adorn each model's dash.

Jaguar's next-generation XJ is due in 2020. The sedan will likely take a brief hiatus as Jaguar switches it over to its new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform. Production of the current model ended in July.

The XJ's redesign will be spearheaded by an all-electric model for the 2021 model year. However, it is rumored that internal-combustion power will return to Jaguar's executive sedan after the BEV model hits showrooms.

Jaguar design boss Julian Thomson previously let slip that the styling of the next XJ will "not be conventional." Thomson took over for former lead designer Ian Callum upon his departure earlier this year and worked under him as he oversaw the styling of Jaguar's modern lineup.

The 2019 XJ Collection Special Edition is on sale now with an MSRP of $86,025 including a $1,025 destination charge.

BMW - Repair and Service Redwood City - BMW i8 to bow out in April - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2020 BMW i8 Ultimate Sophisto Edition

BMW's i8 plug-in hybrid sports car will bow out of production in April, a spokesman for the company said Tuesday.

It turns out the i8 Ultimate Sophisto Edition rolled out at the 2019 Frankfurt International Motor Show was launched as a sendoff. Just 200 will be built, each featuring a special paint finish called Sophisto Gray and an interior lined in leather whose color is called E-Copper.

2020 BMW i8 Ultimate Sophisto Edition

The i8 was launched in 2014 with much fanfare but failed to ignite the market, with sales in the United States reaching just 1,102 units in 2019, which was the car's third best year.

Part of the reason is that the i8 isn't as fast as its looks suggest, with the 0-60 mph time coming in at 4.2 seconds, or slower than many performance sedans and even some SUVs. Its inline-3 engine is also never going to win any prizes for aural excitement, although the i8 pumps fake sounds into its cabin to mask this shortcoming.

BMW Vision M Next concept

The good news is that BMW is thought to be working on a replacement. Last year we also got the BMW Vision M Next concept car which borrowed the i8's lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber underpinnings but swapped the inline-3 engine for an inline-4 mill. Together with an electric motor at each axle, the setup was good for 600 horsepower. Compare that to the i8 which makes just 369 hp.
Unfortunately, there's no word on when we might see a new sports car like the Vision M Next concept.
