VW - Repair and Service Redwood City - 2022 Volkswagen Arteon receives power boost, 7-speed DCT - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

2021 Volkswagen Arteon

Volkswagen's Arteon may not be a huge seller but the handsome hatchback plays an important role of serving as the brand's flagship. As a result, VW continues to update the Arteon to ensure it's brimming with the latest tech.

VW announced on Monday that the Arteon will enter the 2022 model year with a new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 generating 300 hp and 296 lb-ft of torque. That's up on the 268 hp and 258 lb-ft generated by the current model.

A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission will also replace the current model's 8-speed automatic in the 2022 Arteon, and buyers will be able to continue choosing between front- or all-wheel drive.

Three grades, SE, SEL and SEL Premium, will be available, all of them including the sporty R-Line styling pack as standard. For 2022, the SE features a new 18-inch wheel design, as well as parking sensors and wireless charging for mobile devices. The SEL receives all-wheel drive as standard, and will be available with a new 20-inch wheel design in a dark graphite finish.

VW also said that most of its 2022 lineup will feature a digital instrument cluster as standard.

The latest updates come after 2021's mild facelift across the Arteon range. That facelift saw a hybrid powertrain, shooting brake body style, and 316-hp Arteon R grade added to the range, though none of these have been made available in the U.S.

Porsche - Repair and Service Redwood City - Gunther Werks shows off 993 Speedster in Monterey - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Gunther Werks 993 Speedster - 2021 Monterey Car Week

Singer isn't the only high-end restorer of classic Porsche 911s. There's another company hailing from California by the name of Gunther Werks, and it used this month's 2021 Monterey Car Week to present an example of its speedster based on the 993-generation Porsche 911.

Gunther first made headlines in 2018 when it unveiled its own carbon-fiber 993 body shell, specifically for a 993 coupe. The company then followed with a speedster body earlier this year, which it presented to the public for the first time at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, one of the premier events of Monterey Car Week.

The example shown features an exterior in Peninsula Cypan paint and an interior lined in Mandarin Orange leather. Power comes from a Porsche 4.0-liter flat-6 engine massaged by Rothsport Racing. Peak output from the naturally aspirated unit is 435 hp and 335 lb-ft of torque.

Building the 993 Speedster isn't an easy job. After removing the roof, Gunther Werks needed to make a number of key steps to avoid the common side effect of eliminating the roof, which typically reduces torsional rigidity. But with Porsche itself having only built two 993 Speedsters, Gunther Werks didn't have an original to work with.

The company's solution was to stiffen the chassis by employing reinforcements in the space where the coupe’s rear seat compartment was previously located. Now this area is sheltered by the new carbon-fiber Speedster top and tonneau cover, together with a roll cage and roll hoop system.

A lower rake windscreen utilizes a 964-generation 911 Speedster glass piece stabilized with a carbon-fiber frame and cowl, plus aluminum reinforcements. Other key upgrades include adaptive suspension from JRZ, center lock hubs from Eisenlohr Racing, and Fuchs-style five-spoke (with carbon-fiber barrels and magnesium centers).
