Land Rover is working on a redesign for its Range Rover and the latest spy shots show a prototype for the long-wheelbase variant.

The prototype can clearly be identified by its stretched wheelbase and rear door. The previous long-wheelbase Range Rover was about eight inches longer than the regular model and the same is probably true for this new generation. It should also be differentiated from the regular model by more luxurious appointments in the cabin.

Both the regular and long-wheelbase versions of the redesigned, fourth-generation Range Rover are expected on sale in late 2021 as 2022 models. A new Range Rover Sport should also be coming, likely one year after the regular Range Rover.

Underpinning the vehicle will be Land Rover's new MLA (Modular Longitudinal Architecture) platform that debuts this year in a redesigned Jaguar XJ. It was previously thought the platform would debut in the redesigned Defender but Land Rover went with an evolution of the D7 platform instead for the off-roader. The D7 platform underpins the outgoing Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, as well as the Discovery.

The MLA platform has been designed to fit battery-electric powertrains and will eventually underpin most models from the Jaguar and Land Rover brands. The platform will also be lighter than the aluminum-intensive D7 platform.

As for powertrains, expect the redesigned Range Rover to feature the inline-6 engine and mild-hybrid system that was just introduced in to the current Range Rover for 2020. The setup is good for 355 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque in base P360 guise and 395 hp and 406 lb-ft in sportier P400 guise.

Above this should be a new plug-in hybrid setup featuring the inline-6 engine mated to an electric motor at the front axle and a second electric motor powering the rear axle. The current Range Rover plug-in hybrid only has a single-electric motor setup. A battery-electric powertrain will also be offered in the new Range Rover at some point.

It isn't clear if a V-8 will be offered with the redesigned Range Rover, though a deal with BMW Group could potentially make it happen. Jaguar Land Rover and BMW Group are already poised to share some engines and electric powertrains, and hopefully a V-8 is on the cards.
Production will be handled at Land Rover's plant in Solihull, United Kingdom, where the current generation is built.

Mercedes-Benz is working on a redesign for its C-Class and once again the nameplate will offer high-performance versions developed by Mercedes-AMG.

This time around a C53 will fill in for the current C43 while a C63 will continue to sit at the top of the range.

Our latest spy shots show a prototype for the new C53. It should debut late this year or early next, as a 2022 model. The regular C-Class is due around the same time while the new C63 should arrive six months to a year further out.

We know this is the C53 because of the four round exhaust tips at the rear, the Panamericana grille up front, and the large, cross-drilled brake rotors at the front axle. The C63 should have a more aggressive front fascia, square-shaped exhaust tips, and better brakes, possibly even carbon-ceramic rotors.

Both the new C53 and C63 will adopt turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. Yes, get ready to say goodbye to the V-8 in the C63.

The C53 should have AMG's 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 found in the tuner's compact range. It delivers as much as 416 horsepower at present, eclipsing the current C43's 385 hp.

The C63 is likely to feature this same engine paired with a mild-hybrid system for a combined output matching or exceeding the current C63 S model's 503 hp. The mild-hybrid system will likely include an electric compressor as well as a belt-driven electric motor-generator. The latter would serve as the engine's starter but would also be able to provide a boost during high loads and recover energy under braking.

A 9-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive system should complete the mechanical package on both the C53 and C63.

Stay tuned for updates as development continues.

Jaguar - Repair and Service Redwood City - 2021 Jaguar XJ spy shots - Bosch European Redwood City - (650) 368-3000

Jaguar's XJ flagship sedan bowed out at the end of 2019 but a successor based on a new platform and offering battery-electric power has been spotted testing for the first time.

A reveal is expected later this year meaning we should see the car arrive as a 2021 model.

The new XJ sticks to the coupe-like format of its predecessor but modernizes it with fresh details. The daytime running lights of the headlights look similar to the design used in the new Land Rover Defender, while we know the taillight graphic will be similar to the design used on the latest Jaguar XE. Jaguar dropped a teaser for the new XJ during the 2019 Frankfurt International Motor Show. It revealed that the taillight will likely span the full width of the rear, too.

Underpinning the car is Jaguar Land Rover's new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform. This is actually be the first application of the platform which will eventually underpin almost every model in the Jaguar Land Rover portfolio.

The platform supports mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric powertrains. In the case of the XJ, the car is expected to arrive with electric power only but later offered with hybrid options. Expect battery capacity to meet or exceed the 90-kilowatt-hour rating of Jaguar's I-Pace.

The new XJ will be built at the same Castle Bromwich plant in the United Kingdom where the previous XJ ceased production last July. In the time since, the plant has undergone a transformation to turn it into an EV hub for Jaguar Land Rover; it will also be the automaker's main source for batteries and electric motors.

Potential rivals for the new XJ include the Porsche Taycan, upcoming Audi E-Tron GT, and high-end versions of the Tesla Model S.
