What's good: Undeniable road presence. Brilliant off-road and less vague than previous model on tarmac. Fitted with 190bhp, 4·0-litre and seriously quick 225bhp, 4·6HE V8s; 134bhp BMW six-cylinder diesel is slow but comes into its own off-road.

What's bad: Build problems. Water ingress into ECU will stop the car. 4·6HE loses value fast. S- and T-reg models 19th from bottom in 2001 Top Gear/JD Power satisfaction survey. In 2001 Land Rover rated by Motor Warranty Direct as Britain's second worst out of 22 marques for warranty claims. Its vehicles had highest average cost in warranty claims for cars up to 10 years old in 2002 Warranty Direct Index.

Land Rover third least reliable of 31 makes of car in 2002 Which? survey 2000-2002. Land Rovers had third highest warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Index.

What to watch out for: Signs of severe usage. Listen for transmission noise on manual versions. Look for oil leaks from axles, gearbox and transfer case and dog damage to leather seats and trim. Check all electrics. Alloy wheels have a habit of corroding to the hubs. If paying dealer prices, get a full service history. Problem on 4.6s of coolant loss through block porosity, so check for lack of coolant.

Recalls: 1995 (VIN LP311035 to LP312917): ABS braking hose may fail. 1998 V8: cooling system hoses may fail. 2000: June '94-August '98 build: automatic gearbox fluid can seep out and spill on hot exhaust, creating fire risk. V8s built June '98-Sept '99 may lose power steering. 5/12/2000: 15,767 V8s cooling system hoses and throttle body heater gasket may fail. Replace both parts. 3/4/2001: automatics built Jan '98-Dec 2000, VINs XA410482-1A452817 and XA220000-1A299999: water may corrode park lock mechanism. Breather pipe to be re-routed and affected gearboxes to be repaired. 3/4/2001: High-pressure hose of Active Cornering Enhancement system to be replaced and fractured attenuator, if present, replaced.
