Volkswagen has revealed yet another model we in the U.S. can
only dream about. You’re looking at the all-new Golf GTD Variant, essentially a
more practical wagon version of the diesel-powered
Golf GTD hot hatch. It makes its debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show and
like its five-door sibling it won’t
be landing on these shores anytime soon.
That’s a shame, because the Golf GTDs are ideal for anyone
looking for a sporty car
that’s also economical. Power comes from a turbocharged
2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI diesel engine good for 181 horsepower and 280
pound-feet of torque, which is enough for 0-62 mph acceleration in 7.9 seconds.
That might not seem quick, but note that the engine’s peak
torque is delivered from as low as 1,750 rpm, which gives the car great pick-up
speed around town. Fuel economy, meanwhile, averages about 53 mpg in European
combined cycle testing. Transmissions include six-speed manual and six-speed
DSG dual-clutch
units.

2015 Volkswagen Golf GTD Variant
To go along with the potent powerplant, the Golf GTD Variant
also picks up a number of Golf GTI styling cues. These include a sporty body
kit, 17-inch alloys, lowered suspension and chrome-tipped exhausts.
The cabin also gets sports seats with GTI-inspired tartan
trim, a sports steering wheel, stainless steel pedal caps, illuminated door
sills, aluminium accents, and a gear knob styled as a golf ball. Some of the
options offered include 18-inch alloys, red brake callipers, and Alcantara or
Vienna leather trim.
